Questions menstruelles au Moyen Âge

Medieval Menstrual Matters: Power, Purity, and Bodies in Global Contexts

Call for Chapters

A collected volume edited by Rosalie Gabay Bernheim and Kerstin Mayerhofer

Following successful IMC 2024/2025 panels on menstruation in the Middle Ages, Rosalie Gabay Bernheim (St Andrews) and Kerstin Mayerhofer (Vienna) are delighted to share the attached Call for Chapters for a collected volume.

We believe this collection will be a thought-provoking contribution to medieval women's and gender history. The aim is to fill a gap in the field by bringing together medical, theological, and cultural perspectives on menstruation in the Middle Ages. Two publishers have already expressed interest, serious contract negotiations are scheduled to begin early next year.

We welcome contributions from all fields exploring the medieval period.
Topics of interest may include, but are not limited to:
  • Theology and Ritual Purity
  • Medical Discourses
  • Material Culture and Lived Experience
  • Magic, Folklore, and Potency
  • Literary and Artistic Representations
  • The Lifecycle of Bleeding
  • Comparative Frameworks

Please submit a 300-word abstract and a brief author biography (150 words) to rosalie.bernheim[at]gmail.com and mayerhk2[at]univie.ac.at by 24th November 2025.

Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 10th December 2025.

Submissions will undergo external double-blind peer review. To support cohesion across the volume, contributors will also be invited to provide peer feedback on one another’s chapters.

First chapter drafts (6,000–8,000 words) are due 1st June 2026 and will then be sent for external review. Revisions will be scheduled for September 2026.

We encourage submissions from scholars at all career stages and from institutions worldwide. Please indicate any accessibility needs in your email.
