Populated by curanderos, midwives, bonesetters, witches, doctors, nurses, and the indigenous people they served, this nuanced history demonstrates how cultural and political history, misogyny, racism, and racialization influence public health. In the first half of the twentieth century, the governments of Ecuador and Guatemala sought to spread scientific medicine to their populaces, working to prevent and treat malaria, typhus, and typhoid; to boost infant and maternal well-being; and to improve overall health.

Drawing on extensive, original archival research, David Carey Jr. shows that highland indigenous populations in the two countries tended to embrace a syncretic approach to health, combining traditional and new practices. At times, both governments encouraged—or at least allowed—such a synthesis: even what they saw as "nonscientific" care was better than none. Yet both, especially Guatemala's, also wrote off indigenous lifeways and practices with both explicit and implicit racism, going so far as to criminalize native medical providers and to experiment on indigenous people without their consent. Both nations had authoritarian rule, but Guatemala's was outright dictatorial, tending to treat both women and indigenous people as subjects to be controlled and policed. Ecuador, on the other hand, advanced a more pluralistic vision of national unity, and had somewhat better outcomes as a result.

La Chirurgia Magna dont Gui de Chauliac, médecin des papes, achève la rédaction en 1363 occupe une place singulière dans l’histoire de la chirurgie et plus largement dans l’histoire des idées, en portant témoignage de ce que l’on a nommé le « premier humanisme ». Les études rassemblées dans ce volume situent d’abord l’œuvre en un temps, celui du grand essor des universités médiévales, et en un lieu : Montpellier à la fin du Moyen Âge. Le contexte scientifique dans lequel a pu s’élaborer cette somme méthodique de théories et de pratiques chirurgicales est approché par l’analyse des sources antiques ou arabes, et aussi par les divergences qu’exprime Gui avec ses prédécesseurs immédiats. La transmission de l’œuvre sous toutes ses formes, éditions savantes et abrégés pour les barbiers-chirurgiens, est mise en lumière : après la première édition en français, en 1478, les maîtres ou docteurs de Montpellier, Symphorien Champier, Laurent Joubert, François Ranchin, s’illustrent en divulguant les apports de la Grande Chirurgie. Ils revisitent un maître qui incarne l’« identité montpelliéraine » et qui pose les grandes questions du statut de la chirurgie, dans son rapport aux autorités comme dans son problématique équilibre entre science et art.

What happens when we juxtapose medicine and law in the ancient Roman world? This innovative collection of scholarly research shows how both fields were shaped by the particular needs and desires of their practitioners and users. It approaches the study of these fields through three avenues. First, it argues that the literatures produced by elite practitioners, like Galen or Ulpian, were not merely utilitarian, but were pieces of aesthetically inflected literature and thus carried all of the disparate baggage linked to any form of literature in the Roman context. Second, it suggests that while one element of that literary luggage was the socio-political competition that these texts facilitated, high stakes agonism also uniquely marked the quotidian practice of both medicine and law, resulting in both fields coming to function as forms of popular public entertainment. Finally, it shows how the effects of rhetoric and the deeply rhetorical education of the elite made themselves
constantly apparent in both the literature on and the practice of medicine and law.

Through case studies in both fields and on each of these topics, together with contextualizing essays, Medicine and the Law Under the Roman Empire suggests that the blanket results of all this were profound. The introduction to the volume argues that medicine was not contrived merely to ensure healing of the infirm by doctors, and law did not single-mindedly aim to regulate society in a consistent, orderly, and binding fashion. Instead, both fields, in the full range of their manifestations, were nested in a complex matrix of social, political, and intellectual crosscurrents, all of which served to shape the very substances of these fields themselves. This poses forward-looking questions: What things might ancient Roman medicine and law have been meant or geared to accomplish in their world? And how might the very substance of Roman medicine and law have been crafted with an eye to fulfilling those peculiarly ancient needs and desires? This book suggests that both fields, in their ancient manifestations, differed fundamentally from their modern counterparts, and must be approached with this fact firmly in mind.

In addition, preference will be given to candidates with a specialisation in the history of technology or environmental history as well as in the history of technological knowledge and material culture with a special focus on gender aspects. The successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to the Research Training Group 2696 “Transformations of Science and Technology since 1800”, and to the work of the IZWT. SCARCE (Sustained Concerns: Administration of Mineral Resources in Central Europe, 1550-1850) is working at the intersection of history of science and technology, social and economic history, and environmental history (https://scarce.univie.ac.at/). It provides a critical history of today's stakeholder conflicts by showing how contradictory principles of resource management – economic development, sustainability, and technological innovation – were forged in proto-industrial settings. It explores early modern ways of provisioning for communities, making them available for current debates on environmental degradation and climate emergency.

 

A range of profiles (history of science, technology, medicine, gender, environmental, social, economic) would fit for the positions, and candidates are encouraged to propose their own project based on own interest and expertise. Linguistic skills will be a key selection criterion, as much of the sources and literature are in German and other (East) Central European languages, but there’s room for improving languages on the job and taking a transregional approach with additional archives elsewhere. Dans l’après-68, des dizaines de comités du Mouvement pour la liberté de l’avortement et de la contraception ont pratiqué des avortements hors de la sphère médicale. Au moyen d’une ethnographie historique combinant un large corpus d’entretiens rétrospectifs et d’archives, l’ouvrage éclaire la constitution de l’avortement en problème de santé en s’intéressant aux possibles que l’histoire a écartés. L’étude de MLAC dissidents – des groupes de non médecins ayant revendiqué une pratique abortive jusqu’en 1984 (à Aix-en-Provence, Lille, Lyon et Paris) – propose une analyse incarnée qui embrasse, dans un même mouvement, l’instauration du monopole médical sur l’avortement et les résistances à ce processus selon une orientation féministe.

To fully understand the changes in European animal husbandry during the long twentieth century, it is necessary to examine all aspects of the food chain devoted to supplying proteins and fats to a growing population. Indeed, the twentieth century saw great changes in animal husbandry - towards a market-oriented, intensified and specialized production. This influenced and was influenced by policies, trade, aspects of animal and public health, food supply issues, aims in animal breeding, development of production systems, principles in feeding and impact of producer cooperatives.

Because it is not possible to apprehend all these global changes from a rural point of view, this book aims to bring together many different expert perspectives in fields such as: agronomy, veterinary medicine, microbiology, history of sciences, economic and cultural history, and sociology. Taking into account both national idiosyncrasies and changes from an international perspective, the book gathers scientists from Italy, Spain, France, England, The Netherlands and Sweden.

The first part of the book will be devoted to the evolution of animal husbandry and commercialization from the end of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century. The second part of the book is devoted to the increasing medicalization of this sector with a special focus on the role of veterinarians and on the increasing uses of antibiotics.

Tandis que la mort véritable est aseptisée, éloignée des décors familiers et des domiciles, transférée à partir des années 1950 et cantonnée aux chambres d’hôpitaux, la bande dessinée a la possibilité de lui donner à la fois d’autres couleurs et une présence. Le squelette personnifie souvent la mort ou du moins oblige à s’interroger sur la finitude des êtres humains. Les ectoplasmes, moins nombreux que les squelettes à prendre place dans les cases, sont une autre manifestation du corps-mort qui peut reposer dans un cercueil ou être enfoui dans un passé révolu. Quant aux fantômes, leur personnage parcourt les planches depuis longtemps. Spectres, revenants et autres esprits peuvent être observés sur la couverture d’un album, dans les pages intérieures, dans une seule case ou plusieurs planches.

À la variété de ces inscriptions dans des genres de la bande dessinée, le fantastique, l’aventure, le policier, ainsi que dans des registres divers (manga, comics, bande dessinée mainstream) répond également, dans cet ouvrage, une pluralité d’approches, de méthodes, de perspectives critiques, d’ancrages disciplinaires. La bande dessinée invite à l’articulation pluridisciplinaire des lectures et permet de restituer la généalogie des fantômes, les questions de traumatismes et de guerres et l’exploration d’un univers inconnu : celui de l’existence après la mort.
Dans ce volume ont été privilégiées les modalités plus intimes que spectaculaires, reposant davantage sur la communication des morts et des vivants que sur l’action terrifiante des premiers sur les seconds.

Dans ce numéro d’automne, nous vous proposons de découvrir l’Hôtel-Dieu de Belleville en Beaujolais. Les auteurs, membres de l’association L’Albarelle, nous entraînent dans un voyage entre 1733 et nos jours, autour de l’accueil des indigents par les Soeurs de Sainte-Marthe, avec aussi un aperçu de l’évolution de la médecine de proximité au fil du temps : création d’une apothicairerie en 1749, agrandissement des bâtiments vers 1850, pratique de la chirurgie et des accouchements au début du XXe siècle. Fermé depuis 1991, cet Hôtel-Dieu, dont les bâtiments majestueux et l’apothicairerie forment un très bel ensemble, est désormais ouvert à la visite et mérite, si j’ose dire, le voyage. Et même un voyage de plusieurs jours, à la découverte des autres Hôtels-Dieu et apothicaireries du Beaujolais et la vallée de la Saône ! (Voir page 21)
Le second article s’intéresse à l’épopée qui a abouti, en 1969, à la création de la Faculté de médecine de Saint-Étienne, puis à son développement, dans un contexte politique souvent compliqué. Le Pr Patrice Queneau, qui en fut l’un des acteurs principaux, nous raconte par le menu les étapes de ce combat épique qui dura près d’un demi-siècle. Cette démarche s’inscrivait dans la défense et le renouveau de la ville de Saint-Étienne, dans les années 1960, après la fermeture de ses principaux joyaux industriels.

The Department of History at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, invites applications for an open rank, tenure-line faculty position in the History of Science, Health, or Disability, broadly conceived, in South/Southeast Asia or Latin America. Specialty may be in any time period. Interdisciplinary scholars are welcome to apply. Salary and compensation will be competitive, commensurate with rank and achievement. A strong scholarly record and commitment to teaching are expected.

This search is part of a cluster of interdisciplinary hires in areas prioritized for investment and expansion by university leadership. The successful candidate will join a collegial and energetic department that is already home to active programs in Disability Studies and the medical humanities, as well as historians of gender, race, sexuality, empire, and religion.

UB History faculty members are dedicated researchers and teachers eager to work with students in introductory surveys, upper-level undergraduate courses, and graduate seminars. Standard duties for academic-year (10-month) faculty at UB, an R1 University and AAU member institution, include maintaining a strong research program; teaching two courses per semester, including undergraduate courses and graduate seminars; mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, including training graduate students and advising PhD dissertations; and providing service to the Department and University.

We seek a colleague whose teaching, research, and service have prepared them to contribute to the Department and University’s commitment to equity and the inclusion of diverse students and audiences in higher education. We are especially interested in a candidate with experience supporting and mentoring a diverse student body.

Louise Ryan and Grainne McPolin present an oral history project involving 40 Irish nurses who worked in the NHS during 1950s-60s.

From its inception in 1948, through the 1950s-70s, Irish women were amongst the largest groups directly recruited to train and work as nurses in the NHS. This presentation draws upon an oral history project, led by Louise Ryan and Grainne McPolin, involving over 40 Irish-born nurses across Britain, and will explore the women's stories of recruitment, training and early experiences on the wards during the 1950s-60s. The photographs accompanying this project, were taken by photographer Fiona Freund, and funded by the Burdett Trust for Nursing.

Chirurgien-accoucheur et professeur à l’école de médecine de Lyon, Fleury Imbert fut une personnalité intellectuelle et militante tout à fait originale. Disciple direct et héritier du fondateur de la phrénologie, Franz Joseph Gall, Imbert n’hésita pas à critiquer la pratique de la Société de phrénologie de Paris. Fouriériste après avoir été saint-simonien, il ne fut pas le leader local du mouvement mais un adhérent original et critique. Fleury Imbert est l’auteur d’une doctrine médicale qui ramène la santé, la maladie et la médecine à la connaissance du système nerveux (encéphale, moelle, nerfs). Il est également l’inventeur d’une « physiologie de l’histoire » dans laquelle il distingue trois phases dans l’évolution de l’humanité (barbarie, christianisme, raison) en se fondant sur le schéma phrénologiste, et prédisait, comme Fourier, l’entrée de l’espèce humaine dans l’âge de l’harmonie. De sa vie intime à sa carrière médicale en passant par son œuvre et son engagement, ce livre lève le voile sur un médecin largement méconnu, qui certes ne fut pas un des disciples de théories en vogue, mais qui se considérait bien comme un prophète annonçant une science nouvelle et des temps heureux.

Symposium

5-6 October - Institut d'Études Avancées, Paris

Après une première édition à Boston en avril dernier, le second Symposium "Comparative Health Humanities" se tiendra à l'Institut d’Études Avancées de Paris les 5-6 Octobre 2023 (après-midis).

Ce symposium propose de comparer des idées, concepts et méthodes autour des humanités en santé en France et aux États-Unis. Nous analyserons notamment les impensés de l'impact des infrastructures et contextes nationaux et locaux sur l'élaboration des concepts en humanités médicales. La moitié des sessions seront consacrées à des questions générales sur les humanités en santé en France et aux États-Unis (environnement et de santé ; données médicales; traduction des notions et obstacles à la traduction; humanités médicales et professions de santé), et les autres aborderont plus spécifiquement les questions raciales, de migrations et d'histoire coloniale et post-coloniale dans les humanités en santé en France et aux États-Unis.
