Call for Papers
From postcards depicting the elaborate and beautiful architecture of the historic Kirkbride asylums, to the horrific representations of the state hospital in American Horror Story, this multi-disciplinary anthology explores the many ways in which the asylum has captured the American imagination. Editors are seeking previously unpublished essays on this theme. We encourage scholars in the disciplines of disability studies, film, history, social sciences, literature, and more to submit abstracts for 15-30 pg essays.
- Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- The architectural history of the American asylum
- The asylum as tourist destination (from architectural tours to haunts enthusiasts)
- Treatment of the disabled and mentally ill in asylums
- Representation of the asylum in film/television and literature
- The social role of the asylum
