John Sandlos, Department of History, and Arn Keeling, Department of Geography, Memorial University of Newfoundland, are seeking a PhD student in history and an MA student in geography to study the history and historical legacies of the asbestos industry in Canada. These positions offer opportunities to work as part of an interdisciplinary team, and funding to conduct research travel


Positions Available:

PhD in History

The successful candidates will examine asbestos use in former production facilities such as foundries and insulation plants in Southern Ontario and Quebec.



Two Year Masters (MA) in Geography

The successful candidate will focus on the historical controversies and contemporary legacies of asbestos mining at the unremediated Johns Manville mine in Baie Verte, NL


Comprehensive funding packages are available, pending the outcome of a current SSHRC application, with opportunities to augment the amounts through fellowships scholarships or Graduate Assistantships.
