Special Issue: “Beyond the War on Poverty: New Perspectives on Appalachia since 1970”

The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society invites manuscript proposals for a special issue on various themes in Appalachian Studies since 1970. Appalachia has once again become a focal point in the national conversation following the 2016 presidential election and release of J. D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy. The issues raised have not only called into question time-worn stereotypes and debates surrounding economic, racial, and environmental concerns, but have also stirred a new outpouring of scholarship that examines Appalachia as it enters into a post-coal era. We seek essays that can offer: thoughtful perspectives on the current state of Appalachia and Appalachian Studies; ignite new conversations on regional identity, race, economic structures, and political issues; dispel common misconceptions; and chart a way forward into the twenty-first century. Authors are invited to join the conversation and submit work that focuses on the recent history of the region. Possible topics can include but are not limited to:
- Gender and Labor Environmental Issues
- Coal mining and rural life Activism
- Healthcare Appalachia in the media
- Race Migration in/out of region
- Minority groups and discrimination LGBTQ issues
- Economic diversification Food and culture
The Register of the Kentucky Historical Society is a peer-reviewed, quarterly journal that publishes scholarly articles examining the history of Kentucky and its people. It is published in both print form and electronically on Project MUSE and JSTOR.
Anyone interested in participating in this project should submit a manuscript by October 1, 2018.
