BACKGROUND
The Osler Library of the History of Medicine, opened in 1929, houses the collection of rare medical books on the history of science and medicine donated by Sir William Osler, renowned physician, McGill graduate and professor. Initially comprising 8,000 titles listed in the Bibliotheca Osleriana, the collection is the finest of its kind in Canada and has grown to approximately 100,000 works of both rare and secondary material, as well as archives, artifacts and visual material. The Osler Library is a major resource centre for historical research in the health sciences and it is the international centre for the study of Sir William Osler and the Oslerian tradition. It supports a diverse group of students and teachers at McGill in the Dept. of Social Studies of Medicine, the Faculty of Medicine and related health fields, and departments in the Faculties of Arts and of Science (e.g. English, Art History).
McGill Library and Archives has the largest collection in Quebec and is one of Canada's largest academic libraries. Over 6 million items are held, with a significant collection of e-journals, e-books and e-theses. Databases available cover all disciplinary areas. The Library is a member of CARL (Canadian Association of Research Libraries), ARL (Association of Research Libraries) in the United States, OCLC, CREPUQ (Conférence des recteurs et principaux des universités du Québec), and the Sous-comité des bibliothèques, as well as other cooperative groups such as CRL (Center for Research Libraries).

SELECTION CRITERIA
1. An MLIS degree from an ALA- recognized program or equivalent qualifications is required. Professional experience in an academic or research library with a background in the History of Medicine, or equivalent relevant experience is highly desirable. An additional graduate degree in a relevant subject area is highly desirable.
2. Demonstrated experience in collection development of print, rare and electronic resources, and commitment to develop and provide greater access to this exceptional collection.
3. Capacity to develop an exciting future-oriented environment for this world-class research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.
4. Demonstrated experience articulating vision and goals, and managing multiple projects.
5. Experience with digitization of rare or unique materials.
6. Proven track record in developing services to clients.
7. Demonstrated information and communication technology skills and knowledge.
8. Three or more years' experience supervising staff and coordinating workflows and a track record of roles with increasing managerial responsibility over time.
9. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and abilities in French.
10. Creative and analytical thinking skills and good problem solving ability.
11. Excellent organizational, client service and teamwork skills.
12. High level of professionalism and commitment to the organization and its mission as well as the ability to work flexibly in a changing environment.
13. Proven ability to promote the Library and its services to clients and present a positive image of the library to clients.
14. Ability to understand and respond to priorities and trends in the Library and University environments.
15. Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local, national or international committee work, affiliation with professional associations, etc.
