Across the borders: German-Brazilian Psychiatry between 1900 and 1930

The Centre for Global Health Histories is delighted to provide details of a forthcoming research masterclass on Wednesday 5 October 2016, with Dr. Cristiana Facchinetti (Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, Fiocruz). This workshop will be free to attend and open to all, but places will unfortunately be strictly limited and available on a first come first served basis.
This research masterclass will be centered on the circulation of German-speaking psychiatric knowledge in early twentieth-century Brazil. Dr. Faccinetti will explore how those theories and practices were absorbed at the National Hospital for the Insane (Hospício Nacional de Alienados) and at the agency for Assistance to the Insane (Assistência a Alienados) in the Federal District (Rio de Janeiro) from 1903 to 1930, when Juliano Moreira was the director of both institutions.
The period was crucial to the formation of a national mental health service and to the development of Brazilian Psychiatry, as a modern science. Psychiatry became increasingly socially important at this time, especially because of the new responses it had to offer to the challenges posed by a population seen as an obstacle to the modernization projects. We expect that the strategy will allow us to demonstrate how Brazilian Psychiatrists fit Kraepelin’s theories and practices into distinctive local reality, responding to own demands and dynamics, and producing different practices
