The College of Arts and Humanities is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in the History of Medicine on a Teaching and Research career pathway in the Department of History and Classics. We welcome applications from candidates with research and academic potential and interest in the History of Medicine, broadly conceived to include social and cultural histories of medicine, history of disability and relevant aspects of the history of the body, focussing on any country or period after 1500.

The College is a successful, growing and ambitious research and teaching enterprise. Grouped in six departments with a central administration and management, including a Research Institute for the Arts and Humanities, the College’s 170 staff deliver a wide variety of degree programmes to 3000 UG, PGTM and PGR students. We are committed to pursuing world-class research and providing an outstanding student experience. Four of the UoAs based in the College are in the REF 2014 ‘Top Thirty’ and the University overall is 26th.

With buoyant student applications and the opportunity to expand into new facilities on the Singleton Park campus as the University opens a second campus for Engineering, the Arts and Humanities are planning for further growth. We will develop our international collaborations, our successful cross-disciplinary initiatives, and our role as a major contributor to the cultural life of Wales and beyond. The College is looking to build on the success of the Department of History and Classics which was ranked =27th for History in REF 2014. This appointment is one of a number that will reinforce success and drive innovation.

The successful candidate will support and extend the continued development of teaching, postgraduate supervision and research in history at Swansea. The Department of History and Classics at Swansea University is a large, ambitious and vibrant unit with 35 staff and over 900 undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is an outward-looking unit, distinctive for its breadth of scholarly activity from the ancient civilisations to the contemporary world, and for its firm commitment to engaging with the heritage and public history agendas in Wales, the UK, Europe and beyond.
