You will assist and support the Co-Investigator in the successful delivery of the project entitled, ‘From Microbes to Matrons: infection control in British hospitals 1870-1970’, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, within the Centre for the History of Medicine, Economic and Social History Subject Area. You will be based at the University of Glasgow and work under the direction of the Co-Investigator, Professor Marguerite Dupree. The aim of this study is to explore infection control and prevention in British hospitals between c1870 and 1970, in order to understand how rates of morbidity and mortality from hospital infection decreased before the introduction of antibiotics, rose due to resistance to drugs, and then fell again to a stable yet still significant rate. The research will examine the organisation of hospitals and the ways in which infection control and prevention shaped practice, pedagogy, procurement and governance arrangements. The study will investigate how ideas, techniques and the material practices of hygiene and infection control and prevention interacted within the operating room, bedside and boardroom through case studies of four hospitals (and their medical and nursing schools) - two in London and two in Scotland - associated with Joseph Lister and Florence Nightingale. This is a joint project with King’s College London and this post will support the work on the two case studies from the Scottish Hospitals, contribute to the website/database management for the project as a whole and contribute to the organisation of a conference on the history of hospital infection control. It will require some travel outwith Glasgow for research and seminars/conferences.

A good first degree in a relevant subject is essential. For Appointment at Grade 7, you will have a Masters degree and/or PhD in a relevant subject. With suitable research experience in a relevant field, you will have experience of employing relevant research methods and the ability to communicate research to the academic and policy communities.
