Pasteurian medicine as Imperial heroism

Louis Pasteur laid the foundation for an impressive network of Pasteur institutes in France and beyond. But what is perhaps most interesting about the institutes that sprang up in Algiers, Tunis, Saigon and elsewhere was the way in which their leaders challenged - and expanded upon - French medical thinking. This is particularly evident in the anti-malarial campaigns that took place in early twentieth-century Algeria. Here and elsewhere, tropical medicine played a crucial (if understudied) role in determining the shape of French imperialism, and enabled a rethinking of imperial power relationships and notions of heroism and 'Frenchness'.
