Call for Papers
The UK Association for the History of Nursing Colloquium
will be held on 9 July 2014 at Kingston University London. This year’s colloquium will return to its
roots, opening up the call for papers to include any aspect of nursing history,
but focussing on work in progress. The Colloquium has a proud tradition of
providing a supportive environment and space for researchers to present work in
progress and obtain feedback for further development of their research. So the
theme is:
‘Nursing History: a work in progress’
The history of nursing is a well-established and
increasingly sophisticated field of academic study, pursued both by
nurse-historians and by researchers from other disciplines, including history
itself, English literature, sociology to name a few. Its interdisciplinarity is
reflected in the themes which run through nursing history conferences: gender and race studies, colonial history, transnational
relationships, class, politics and international studies, in addition to the
development of nursing science and practice. The colloquium will be led by Dr
Sue Hawkins and will be feature a keynote paper from renowned women’s and
gender historian Dr Deborah Simonton.
Please submit abstracts of approximately 250 words, by Friday 14 March 2014, to: Sue Hawkins at s.e.hawkins@kingston.ac.uk.
Book early: capacity is limited to max. 60 people,
allocated on a strictly ‘first come, first served’ basis!
Price: £10 for
students and £15 for non-students.
There will also be a workshop for PhD students and their
supervisors on Thursday, 10 July, at Kingston University.

For anyone planning to attend the Social History of
Medicine Conference in Oxford on 10-12 July, this event will be an ideal
companion, and if you have not been to a nursing history conference before an
ideal introduction to a subject which is growing in importance. Kingston is
only 60 miles or so from Oxford and the Colloquium will certainly get you in
the conference mood.
