Throughout history, religious scholars, medical men and - occasionally - women themselves, have moulded thought on what 'makes' a woman. She has been called the weaker sex, the fairer sex, the purer sex, among many other monikers. Often, she has been defined simply as 'Not A Man'.

Today, we are more aware than ever of the complex relationship between our bodies and our identities. But contrary to what some may believe, what makes a woman is a question that has always been open-ended.

Immaculate Forms examines all the ways in which medicine and religion have played a gatekeeping role over women's organs. It explores how the womb was seen as both the most miraculous organ in the body and as a sewer; uncovers breasts' legacies as maternal or sexual organs - or both; probes the mystery of the disappearing hymen, and asks, did the clitoris need to be discovered at all?

Constructing Moral Babies: The Science of Infancy in Nineteenth-Century America and Britain explores the dynamic interface between philosophy, theology, science, and medicine that gave rise to a culture of modern babyhood that continue to shape and inflect contemporary understandings and treatment of babies in both public and private realms. This study will develop the first comprehensive history of infants that generates new historical and philosophical narratives of infancy. This project places infants at the centre of analysis, rather than as dependents. By interrogating archives, published texts, and objects associated with the ‘science’ of infancy the project will fundamentally shift our understanding of infants and consequently, our treatment of them in both public and private spaces.

The project’s Research Fellow is central to developing and enhancing the research, impact and engagement of this medical humanities project, particularly in relation to public policy. This role requires a passion for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and for accurate and clear communication of knowledge and research that is meaningful and accessible to those outside of academia. The Research Fellow will assist the Principal Investigator, Wellcome Trust Fellow Dr. Elisabeth Yang, in bringing the gap between theory and practice whilst gaining essential skills, experience, and mentoring in pursuing independent research and engaging with both US and UK public policy audiences. You will co-develop a plan for research with the Principal Investigator, involving both independent and collaborative activities

High expectations for a better world followed the First World War. Many changes took place aligned with ‘progress’, but in England the poorest benefited little from them. This was all too evident in the nation’s public mental hospitals. Patients were their raison d’ȇtre, yet their experiences show that they sat at the foot of the country’s priorities.

Petty Tyranny and Soulless Discipline? places patients at its centre to explore their daily lives, including their admission, care, treatment, discharge and after-care, or death. These narratives, drawn from a range of primary sources, are contextualised in an historical analysis of how and why a mixture of stagnating and changing knowledge, attitudes and ideals affected patients’ experiences. The Lunacy Act 1890 underpinned life in the mental hospitals by setting out their organisation, regulation and funding. A variety of professionals, campaigners for reform, central government departments, local authorities, trades unions and voluntary organisations, often with competing agendas, influenced what happened to patients. There was also new medical knowledge, from Britain and beyond. This book weaves these strands into a coherent whole, to reveal the complexity of mental health provision in the past and enable reflection that might inform debate today.

Comment l’âme interagit-elle avec le corps ? Ces deux entités sont-elles unies ou séparées ? Quel est leur point d’intersection ou quels sont les médiateurs entre le corps et l’âme ? Le présent volume, qui s’inscrit dans la perspective d’une histoire intellectuelle et conceptuelle au long cours, regroupe onze contributions qui explorent comment différents auteurs, depuis l’Antiquité jusqu’au xviiie siècle, ont questionné et analysé les modalités d’interaction et d’union du corps et de l’âme. Les contributions sont regroupées en fonction de leur période (Antiquité, Moyen Âge, période moderne) et abordent les sujets suivants : les relations physiologiques qu’entretiennent le corps et l’âme considérés dans leur globalité, la question des facultés végétales et végétatives qui traversent les différentes espèces vivantes, la nature de certains médiateurs comme le pneuma ou spiritus et les species ou encore ce que révèlent les contextes pathologiques sur ces liens entre le corps et l’âme.

Les anciens moulages en cire font aujourd’hui l’objet d’un intérêt renouvelé, notamment de la part des dermato-infectiologues qui trouvent dans le réalisme de ces artefacts d’utiles auxiliaires pour l’enseignement clinique. La matérialité de la cire qui permet de mimer la chair humaine, l’empreinte prise à même la lésion cutanée, l’expressivité de pièces à l’échelle 1/1 confortent l’impression d’avoir affaire à des reproductions d’après nature.

Or c’est précisément ce réalisme du moulage, cette idée d’un accès direct aux corps de patients moulés, presque en dépit de la profondeur historique, que ce dossier se propose d’examiner.

De fait, les moulages sont des objets fascinants et complexes à la fois par leur facture, par les intentions qui ont présidé à leur réalisation et par leur statut fluctuant entre art, science, pédagogie et objets de spectacle morbide. Les études réunies ici renouvellent notre connaissance de l’histoire des moulages médicaux en s’intéressant notamment au contexte colonial, à la circulation des moulages dans les anciens films de propagande antivénérienne, aux enjeux liés à la couleur de peau des modèles et aux ambiguïtés de l’exhibition de « beaux cas » de dermatologie.
