Camille Laurin, psychiatre et politicien

Camille Laurin (1922-1999). Psychiatre francophone, politicien souverainiste et catholique personnaliste

Appel à communications

Journées d’étude organisées par Alexandre Klein (Université d’Ottawa) et Martin Pâquet (Université Laval)

Université Laval – 6-7 octobre 2022

Mode hybride

The Past, Present, and Future of Scientific Instrument Studies

Call for papers

XLI Scientific Instrument Symposium, 19 – 23 September 2022

National Hellenic Research Foundation, Athens

http://sic2022.hpdst.gr/

We will take the 40th anniversary of the Scientific Instrument Symposia as an occasion to discuss how the study of scientific instruments has changed in the last four decades and where we stand today. Are we now studying different kinds of instruments? Has the very definition of what is a scientific instrument changed? Are we studying the same instruments in a different way and within different contexts? How have the questions we seek to answer and our methodologies changed? What about our disciplinary and regional boundaries?

While it comes natural for a historian to historicise their own past, we should think in the same way about the future of scientific instrument studies. What are our new objects and objectives? While we are comfortable as a community of scientific instrument enthusiasts, we want to remain open to new scholars, new methods and new approaches to instruments, and aim to extend our geographical reach.

The theme “The Past, Present, and Future of Scientific Instrument Studies” was chosen for the 41st Scientific Instrument Symposium long before the recent and sudden demise of Paolo Brenni, former President of the Scientific Instrument Commission, but we believe that this theme is a fitting tribute to honour Paolo’s achievements. His dedication, enthusiasm and generosity with his knowledge embodied the heart and soul of scientific instrument studies like nobody else!

For the upcoming 41st SIC Symposium in Athens, we invite you to reflect on these and other issues related to the past, present and future of scientific instrument studies. As always, we welcome all proposals for sessions, papers or posters on any topic dealing with the history of scientific instruments.

"It Is More Respectable for Women to Deal with Such Things". Surgeons, Midwives, and the Question of Shame in Early Modern Germany

Talk by Sabine Schlegelmilch – University of Würzburg

22 February 2022, 5.00-6.30 pm (CET)

In the first half of the 18th century, the concept of birth clinics emerged in Germany, where male obstetricians, so-called accoucheurs, were trained. The replacement of midwives from part of their original field of work is usually explained with the narrative of progressive medicalisation. However, as source texts from the late 17th-century show, this development was not as straightforward as it is often portrayed.

Between 1600 and 1800, approximately 200 midwifery books were published in Germany.

These were texts that were primarily designed to instruct practising midwives. However, only those intended for the midwifery schools that were attached to the birth clinics have received attention so far. These texts are, of course, influenced by the educational intentions of university medicine. Earlier copies from the 1670s-1730s, however, paint a different picture. They depict a widely unknown discussion about the role and tasks of midwives. This discussion, characterised by a positive image of midwives, was only possible in Germany in this way during the period of the early Enlightenment, when the “learned” woman was still an accepted image. As a result, and only for a short time, midwives even began to write books themselves for their professional colleagues.

The background to this development is an important aspect of cultural history that has also not been sufficiently elaborated so far. The midwives’ books also discuss the shame of both the women giving birth, who did not want to let male obstetricians touch their bodies, and the obstetricians, who felt uncomfortable with the exposed female bodies. The birthing room was considered a female-defined space where men had no business being. Some of the texts name this circumstance as typical for the German-speaking region.

Recent research has described the period of the Early Enlightenment in Germany as a phase of “opening” and “closing” and pointed out that the two terms should not be assigned chronologically as a matter of course (in the sense that, for example, opening is always associated with enlightenment).

This lecture brings together the factors mentioned so far to form a picture of the turn of the century (17th/18th), that shows to what extent the thesis of “opening” and “closing” also applies to the development of the medical profession.

The event is free to attend but registration is required. To register click here.

L'avènement de la psychanalyse

L'avènement de la psychanalyse

Nicole Edelman

Stilus
10/02/2022
ISBN 1095543342

(english follows)

https://event.fourwaves.com/fr/blindness/pages

(Critical) Blindness Studies: Current Debates and Future Directions

Call for papers

The Organizing Committee of the international online symposium "(Critical) Blindness Studies: Current Debates and Future Directions" (June 30, July 1, 4 and 5, 2022) invites doctoral and post-doctoral students (with or without institutional status and affiliation) who are working on blindness in the humanities and social sciences to submit a proposal to participate. Submissions are due before March 1st.

The languages of the conference are: French, English, LSF and LSI (the latter only in part). Simultaneous translation from one language to another is planned.

To learn more about this event and submit a proposal, follow the link :

https://event.fourwaves.com/blindness/pages

Concerning the organisation of the conference :

Its aim is to take stock of the field and to envisage the main lines of the future of Blindness Studies, but also to make the field better known to the general public.

For this reason, only 5 minutes of speaking time will be made available to speakers, who will share a summary of some of their research (goals, methods and results). They will then participate in a roundtable discussion with other participants and with the public, that discussion to be structured around the questions shared in the description of our event.

The answers to these questions will form the basis of a "Blindness Studies Manifesto," which will be written collectively after the event. It is therefore important that participants attend the entire event.

Prior to the event (by 30 April), speakers will submit a text (doc or docx format) which can be either :

1) An article, representative of the speaker's work, that has already been written and/or published (if applicable, a version prior to the published version should be posted on the website for copyright reasons).

OR

2) A text (of the average length of an article) written for the occasion, which develops what will be presented orally during your round table, i.e. the summary presentation of the speaker's research.

This text will be made available to all participants (speakers and audience) via the event website.

Finally, the entire event will be recorded and put online in the different languages indicated.

Thank you very much for your attention,

Marion Chottin, Hannah Thompson and Vanessa Warne
