Vice in the Barracks: Medicine, the Military and the Making of Colonial India, 1780-1868

Erica Wald

Series: Cambridge Imperial and Post-Colonial Studies
Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan (March 27, 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1137270985
ISBN-13: 978-1137270986

Sex and alcohol preoccupied European officers across India throughout the nineteenth century, with high rates of venereal disease and alcohol-related problems holding serious implications for the economic and military performance of the East India Company. These concerns revolved around the European soldiery in India – the costly, but often unruly, 'thin white line' of colonial rule. This book examines the colonial state's approach to these vice-driven health risks. In doing so it throws new light on the emergence of social and imperial mindsets and on the empire, fuelled by fear of the lower orders, sexual deviation, disease and mutiny. An exploration of these mindsets reveals a lesser-explored fact of rule – the fractured nature of the Company state. Further, it shows how the measures employed by the state to deal with these vice-driven health problems had wide-ranging consequences not simply for the army itself but for India and the empire more broadly. By refocusing our attention on to the military core of the colonial state, Wald demonstrates the ways in which army decision-making stretched beyond the cantonment boundary to help define the state's engagement with and understanding of Indian society.

Call for participations

10-11 OCTOBER 2014
Kraków, Poland

We wish to invite you to attend the International Interdisciplinary Symposium The Anatomy of Un/Reason : The Birth of Mental Illness and its Fate in Postmodern Culture, during which we would like to discuss the aforementioned topics. Our aim is to exchange thoughts on the phenomenon of madness in modern and postmodern times. The Symposium is planned as an interdisciplinary project; one which shall outline the contexts as widely as possible. Hence, next to representatives of literary and cultural studies, we would like to invite scholars of various other backgrounds as well, including psychology, psychiatry, sociology, and religious studies. We intend to look into different texts of culture which make mental illness their subject, and to analyse the works of authors afflicted with particular mental disorders. Contraception et droits des femmes

Birth Control and the Rights of Women: Post-Suffrage Feminism in the Early Twentieth Century

Clare Debenham

Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: I. B. Tauris (March 27 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1780764359
ISBN-13: 978-1780764351

After the granting of the vote to women in 1918, the struggle for women's rights intensified with a nationwide campaign for the right to birth control. This campaign was met with a great deal of hostility; it threatened to overturn Victorian ideas about female sexuality, female empowerment and the traditional roles within the family. The most well known of the campaigners, scientist and early feminist Marie Stopes, opened clinics across England which fitted 'contraception caps' to women for free. The first history of this grassroots social movement, Birth Control and the Rights of Womenoffers a window into the social and cultural history of the period, and features new archival material in the forms of memoirs, personal papers and press cuttings. This is an essential contribution to the influential field of women's history and a vital addition to the history of feminism.

Learning From The Wounded: The Civil War And The Rise Of American Medical Science

Shauna Devine

Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: University of North Carolina Press (Feb. 27 2014)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1469611554
ISBN-13: 978-1469611556

Nearly two-thirds of the Civil War's approximately 750,000 fatalities were caused by disease--a staggering fact for which the American medical profession was profoundly unprepared. In the years before the war, training for physicians in the United States was mostly unregulated, and medical schools' access to cadavers for teaching purposes was highly restricted. Shauna Devine argues that in spite of these limitations, Union army physicians rose to the challenges of the war, undertaking methods of study and experimentation that would have a lasting influence on the scientific practice of medicine.

Though the war's human toll was tragic, conducting postmortems on the dead and caring for the wounded gave physicians ample opportunity to study and develop new methods of treatment and analysis, from dissection and microscopy to new research into infectious disease processes. Examining the work of doctors who served in the Union Medical Department, Devine sheds new light on how their innovations in the midst of crisis transformed northern medical education and gave rise to the healing power of modern health science.

Conflicting models of selfhood have become central to debates over modern medicine. Newspaper columnists and new age gurus claim that the roots of many of our physical ailments lie in repressed experiences and emotions. Critics of biomedicine argue that a renewed engagement with the patient's inner feelings is needed to humanise contemporary clinical practice. Government initiatives extend medicine's remit beyond the maintenance of the population's health to the achievement of ‘well-being': the psychological state of the population is now used to benchmark the effectiveness and success of policies. These debates, in turn, have helped shape contemporary culture. Concepts of ‘stress' and ‘psychosomatic illness' have become part of every-day speech, allowing us to interpret physical disorders as a commentary on our personal troubles or adverse circumstances. Yet we still lack a clear historical account of how this psychological sensibility came to be established.

Psychology and Medicine in Modern Britain will remedy this situation by demonstrating that there is nothing inevitable about the current connection between health, identity and personal history. It traces the changing conception of the psyche in Britain over the last two centuries and it demonstrates how these changes were rooted in transformed patterns of medical care. The shifts from private medicine through to National Insurance and the National Health Service fostered different kinds of relationship between doctor and patient and different understandings of psychological distress. Psychology and Medicine in Modern Britain examines these transformations and, in so doing, provides new critical insights into our modern sense of identity and changing notions of health that will be of great value to anyone interested in the modern history of British medicine.

électronique et ne donneront pas matière à communication en séance ;
illustrations (légendées et référencées) ;
définition suffisante ;
sera obligatoirement joint à la demande de publication ;
complétera cette demande de publication ;
