In this edition, we look back at the U.S. Navy's long history with sharks--from curious cases of shark  attacks documented by Navy physicians to the development of "full-proof" repellents.  We follow this with an assortment of original stories and sidebars ranging from a look back on the life of a long-living World War II Prisoner of War and the service of Navy flight nurses in the Pacific and in Brazil to the recollection of  Surgeon General Edward Stitt's "Budget Battles" and a glimpse at the Navy Medical Department in 1963.

Cette publication résulte des Actes d’une journée d’études organisée en juin 2011 au Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France. Cet ouvrage collectif est le premier à expertiser de façon détaillée un thème complexe : celui de La coupe d’Hygie. Médecine et chimie dans l’Antiquité. Ce volume propose un exposé pluridisciplinaire où les connaissances de spécialistes se confrontent. Cette étude met en relief les différents aspects de l’histoire des pratiques médicales dans l’Antiquité, et contribue à l’élaboration d’une histoire des remèdes antiques.

„Streitfall Evolution. Eine Kulturgeschichte“ (Debating Evolution. A Cultural History)

to be published by Boehlau (Vienna, Cologne, Weimar). Some of the chapters are as yet unassigned.

The volume cover a wide range of perspectives and disciplines and their approaches to the public debate of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in the past 150 years, including history, history of science, theology, sociology, political sciences, philosophy art history, literary studies, media studies and history of law. Its seven sections with a total of some fifty chapters deal with various aspects and levels of the debate, its actors, arguments, strategies and media as they shaped the way evolution appeared in public discourse.

The individual chapters are written by experts in the respective fields and incorporating state-of-the art research. However, as the volume does not address an academic public but a general public, texts need to present more of an overview instead of single case studies analyzed in depth and from a particular point of view. Each chapter comprises roughly 45,000 to 50,000 characters (including footnotes, this is some 6,700 words in a German-language text) and about 6 to 8 illustrations that are part of the text’s argument, thus more than mere illustrations. Manuscripts for the greater part of the chapters have already been submitted, by Peter Becker, Peter Bowler, Janet Browne, Nicholas Gilham, Mike Hawkins, Uwe Hossfeld, Thomas Junker, Nils Roll-Hansen, Nicolaas Rupke, Marianne Sommer, Heinrich Zankl to name but a few of the authors. However, the following chapters relevant to the volume are as yet unassigned:

- “Missing Link”: connecting piece and icon of the scientific and popular debates on evolution in the past 150 years
- Presenting evolution in the zoo: a theory and its illustration using living specimen
- Images of the scientist in today’s public
- Social darwinism and politics in the twentieth-century
- Social darwinism as a phenomen in the twenty-first century
- Experimenting with humans, breeding humans: Concepts and implementations in Nazi Germany
- Ethical debates on genetic engineering today
- Evolution/Darwinism in Fiction (emphasis on novels and short stories)
- Darwin and evolution on radio and TV in the bicentenary (recordings of the material mainly of German and British broadcasts may be provided)
- The future of the debate on evolution

Outlines sketching the contents of the individual chapters may be forwarded on request, though there is still room for discussion of their focus and orientation.

Prix William Bynum

The William Bynum Prize – a prize as a salutation

Medical History is pleased to announce the launch of the William Bynum Prize, a prestigious, international essay competition coordinated by the Journal with the generous support of Cambridge University Press. The Prize will be awarded to the author of an original essay on any theme relating to the history of medicine and its related sciences. It is open to doctoral students and early post-doctoral researchers (candidates who have completed their PhDs not longer than 3 years before submission of the entry).

The Prize’s awarding committee will be chaired by Professor Bynum himself, supported by Medical History’s editor, Professor Sanjoy Bhattacharya, and members of the journal’s editorial advisory board. Of the competition Professor Bhattacharya, said

“ Cambridge University Press deciding to participate in honouring [Professor Bynum] in this way is fitting considering that it published the seminal Science and the Practice of Medicine in the Nineteenth Century in 1994 (an academic partnership that continued over the years). Cambridge University Press’s support for the William Bynum Prize is also testament to its commitment to supporting young scholars of the history of medicine, a cause that has always been dear to [Professor Bynum’s] heart.”

All competition entries should be sent to the editor by 1 September 2013 (contact details are available on Medical History’s website). Details of the winning essay will be announced in the first 2014 issue of Medical History. The Prize will take the shape of a £250 cash award and £250 in Cambridge University Press vouchers. The winning entry will be published in Medical History if it succeeds in undergoing the journal’s usual reviewing processes. The 2013 Third International Conference on Aging: An Interdisciplinary Conference is held at the University Center Chicago 
on November 8th-9th. Proposals for paper presentations, workshops, roundtables or colloquia are invited, addressing aging and society through one of the following themes:

• Economic and Demographic Perspectives on Aging

• Public Policy and Public Perspectives on Aging

• Medical Perspectives on Aging, Health, Wellness

• Social and Cultural Perspectives on Aging

This year’s Aging Conference will take place in Vancouver, Canada at Robson Square, University of British Columbia. A satellite of the University of British Columbia, UBC Robson Square is located in downtown Vancouver, the largest city on Canada’s west coast. This year’s special theme is Cognition in Aging. Plenary speakers will focus their talks around this theme, but presentations on any of the conference themes are welcome.

The Southern Association for the History of Medicine and Science (SAHMS) invites paper proposals for its sixteenth annual meeting on February 27- March 1, 2014, in St. Louis, Missouri, hosted by the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. 

SAHMS welcomes papers on the history of medicine and science, broadly construed to encompass historical, literary, anthropological, philosophical and sociological approaches to health care and science including race, disabilities and gender studies. Participants may propose individual papers or panels of several papers on a particular theme. 

Each presenter is limited to 20 minutes, with additional time for questions and discussion. Please do not submit papers that have already been published, presented or scheduled for presentation at another meeting. All participants are responsible for their own travel expenses and must pay registration costs in advance of the meeting.
