Term of appointment: to work on a contracted day-rate of £180 per day, for a maximum of 115 days (equivalent to a half-time post for one year), to commence as soon as possible

To work on a contracted day-rate, linked to the British Psychological Society History of Psychology Centre archives in London, and in association with the Centre for the Study of Emotions, Queen Mary University of London
Responsible to: Professor John Hall, Oxford Brookes University, and Professor David Pilgrim, Liverpool University
Job purpose: to support Professor John Hall, Oxford Brookes University, and Professor David Pilgrim, Liverpool University (in collaboration with Dr Rhodri Hayward of QMUL) on behalf of the Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) of the British Psychological Society (BPS), in the preparation of a text on the history of clinical psychology in Britain (to be published in December 2015), and other associated duties.
Key tasks for the researcher are:
- to search relevant archives and papers, as requested by editors and chapter authors, with a view to some content analysis of publications: the main BPS archives are held at the Wellcome Library, and include minutes and associated papers, DCP and BPS publications including journals and newsletters
- to liaise with DCP officers and the Group of Trainers in Clinical Psychology, to collect information and to attend selected meetings and conferences
- to organise and conduct relevant oral history interviews
- in collaboration with the editors and other BPS/DCP officers and staff, to provide administrative support to the project
- depending on the interests and previous historical work done by the candidate, there may be an opportunity to be a chapter author or co-author.
The British Psychological Society (BPS) is the Chartered Body (with 40,000 members) for all psychologists in the UK, and is both a learned society and professional organisation. The Division of Clinical Psychology (formed in 1966) is the largest professional 'Division' within the BPS, with 10,000 members, most of whom work in clinical or academic posts. The Division of Clinical Psychology website, within the main BPS website (www.bps.org.uk) gives further detailed information. The text commissioned by the Division will be published in late 2015 for the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Division in the following year.
The objectives of the book are to address a number of key questions regarding the development of clinical psychology practice, research and training in Britain, focusing on the period ~1948 to ~2009/10. These developments will be described and critiqued from a number of perspectives, including the development of ideas and theories, the goal of using human sciences for human improvement, and the processes of professionalisation.
Job requirements:
- PhD or equivalent in an area related to histories of the human and behavioural sciences or healthcare, with PhD either completed or nearing completion
- a developing track record in producing high quality academic publications
- a developing track record of conference presentations
- ability to search and abstract archival material
- experience of conducting oral history interviews
- evidence of collaboration with psychologists or other healthcare professionals in historically related projects
Expenses up to a total of £4000 may be claimed for travel and other costs directly related to the research project. Additional funding is available from the BPS History of Psychology Centre to support oral history interviews.
