The International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences 45thAnnual Meeting
University of Dallas, Irving, Texas • June 20-23, 2013
Papers, posters, symposia/panels, or workshops are invited for the 45th annual meeting of Cheiron: The International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences. The conference will be held at the University of Dallas, located in Irving, Texas from Thursday, June 20 to Sunday June 23, 2013.
Submissions may deal with any aspect of the history of the human, behavioral, and social sciences or related historiographical and methodological issues. All submissions should conform to the guidelines listed below.

Guidelines
All papers, posters, and proposed symposia/panels should focus on new and original work, i.e. the main part of the work should not have been published or presented previously at other conferences.
To facilitate the peer review and planning process, please provide a separate sheet that includes: a) title; b) author’s name and affiliation; c) author’s mail and email address and phone number; d) audio/visual needs.
Papers: Submit a 300-600 word abstract and bibliography that contains the major sources that inform your work. Presentations should be 20-25 minutes in length.
Posters: Submit a 300-400 word abstract and bibliography that contains the major sources that inform your work.
Symposia/Panels: Organizer should submit a 250-300 word abstract describing the symposium as a whole and a list of the names and affiliations of the participants. Each participant should submit a 300-600 word abstract and bibliography that contains the major sources that inform your work.

Student Stipends & Young Scholar Award
Student Travel Stipends: Cheiron will make funds available to help defray travel expenses for students presenting at the conference. We encourage students to apply for matching stipends at their home institutions. Funding is limited to $100 to $300 per accepted submission; co-authored presentations must be divided among the presenters.
If you wish to be considered for a stipend, please send an additional e-mail to the program chairs at the time you submit your proposal.
Young Scholar Award: Beginning in 2008, Cheiron has awarded a prize for the best paper or symposium presentation by a young scholar. To be eligible for consideration, the paper must be by a single author who is currently a student or who has completed his or her doctoral work not more than 5 years prior to the 2013 meeting. If you qualify and would like your paper to be considered, please inform the program chairs at the time you submit your proposal. Three weeks after the meetings, applicants will submit a copy of the presented paper – which may include minor changes – to the Cheiron Executive Officer. The entries will be judged by the Cheiron Program Committee and the Cheiron Review Committee. The winner will receive a certificate from Cheiron, and will be asked to submit the paper to the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences within a reasonable period of time. If the paper is accepted for publication, the winner will receive a $500 honorarium from Wiley-Blackwell, the publisher of JHBS. Winners will receive assistance in preparing the paper for submission to JHBS.

The University of Dallas
The University of Dallas, an independent Catholic university, is located in Irving, Texas, (population: 201,000) on the northwest boundary of the City of Dallas, about 15 minutes from downtown Dallas. Enrollment (fall 2011) was 1,337 undergraduate and 1,506 graduate students. For further information visit the University’s web site. The University is situated in the middle of the Dallas-Fort Worth area; both Dallas and Fort Worth have major museums, symphony halls, and sports arenas. Cheironians wishing to see the area are advised to rent a car, given the urban sprawl that characterizes this Sunbelt metropolitan area.
Getting to the University of Dallas
Air Travel
Two airports are close to the University. The University is 10 miles from DFW International Airport, and 10 miles from Dallas Love Field. DFW is an international airport, with direct flights to many cities in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Love Field is the home of Southwest Airlines, a domestic airline with an extensive network. (Note: Southwest Airlines [SWA] does not list flights on online travel web sites, such as Travelocity; to access SWA, go to the airline’s web site.)
Local Transit to Campus
The Orange Line of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system has a University of Dallas Station, and it is possible to get to the train from DFW Airport and Love Field. See the DART website for schedule and fares. Limited bus service exists between the train station and campus. A walk from the train station to the Cheiron registration location is about 12 minutes. Taxi and shuttle services (such as SuperShuttle) are also available. Taxi fare from DFW to UD is about $30.
Accommodations
Accommodations include on-campus housing and off-campus hotels (about 3 miles from campus). The primary housing option is UD’s newest residence hall, which opened in January 2010 and offers hotel-style single, double and triple suites, each with a private bath. The triple suites have 3 private rooms with a common room and restroom. Singles and doubles are en suite, without a common room. Also available are traditional dorms with community restrooms on each floor. Wireless internet connection is available in the dorms and at other locations across campus. A temporary pass for the UD network will be provided.
Local hotels with special rates for the conference are: Wyndham Gardens Hotel, Aloft Hotel, and the Omni Hotel. All are located in the Las Colinas area of Irving. Please mention “UD-Cheiron” when registering.
The University Cafeteria, the Haggar Café, will be available for meals during the conference. Meals can be bought with cash or credit cards. We will have a “pub night” on Thursday evening in the University’s Ratskeller. There are many restaurants in the area, including in Las Colinas. Some are near the hotels mentioned above, and some can be reached by the DART train or buses. Parking is abundant and free on campus.
Conference Registration
Conference registration is $95.00 for faculty and $80.00 for students. It will include a reception on Thursday evening. The banquet on Saturday evening will be on campus and will cost $35.00 per person; wine will be included and there will be a cash bar.

The Dallas Museum of Art
There will be a Friday evening tour of the Dallas Museum of Art. The fee for the DMA visit includes the price of bus transport and a docent tour. The DMA is located in what is called the “cultural district” of downtown.
