Graduate Study in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology at the University of Oxford

Call for applications

The application deadline is 12:00 (midday UK time) Friday 8 January 2021

The Oxford Centre for the History of Science, Medicine and Technology, housed in two buildings on Banbury Road, Oxford, brings together broad subject expertise in HSMT as part of the Oxford Faculty of History. The Centre offers teaching and supervision on topics spanning the medieval and modern eras.

We have particular expertise in the history of medieval and early modern science; the history of global and colonial medicine; the history of the material culture of science; the historical relations between technological innovation and warfare; the history of psychiatry; the history of techno-scientific futures; and the history of modern chemistry.

Via the Bodleian Library and college libraries, Oxford boasts a world-class collection of resources relevant to the study of HSMT. Throughout the three terms of the academic year there are weekly seminars in the history of science and medicine, held both in the History Faculty and in colleges. We also benefit from close links with the History of Science Museum, the Pitt Rivers Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, and the St. Cross Centre for the History and Philosophy of Physics (HAPP).

Our doctoral programme (DPhil) offers one-to-one support and supervision in HSMT; nine students have begun their DPhil study in the current year. You will join a vibrant community of researchers in the History Faculty who work on a wide range of different subjects and in a variety of historical periods. We invite applications to study advanced topics with individual members of staff, who can be found here.

We offer one-year (MSc) and two-year (MPhil) master’s programmes, which provide rigorous training in all aspects of HSMT. Master’s students are part of the History Faculty, and can choose to take a range of Option Papers specific to HSMT as well as Papers from general MSt programmes in History.

A number of university, faculty and college scholarships exist in History and Graduate Study at Oxford, but we also offer awards specific to the history of science and medicine. These include the St Cross College HAPP Master’s Scholarship in the History of Science, and Wellcome Trust Master’s and Doctoral Awards in Medical Humanities and Social Sciences.
