International seminar of the research group ‘Hippocratica. International Research Group on Ancient Western Medicine and its Tradition’ (‘Hippocratica. Grupo de Pesquisa Internacional sobre Medicina Ocidental Antiga e sua Tradição’)
Abstract:
The Portuguese physician Estêvão Rodrigues de Castro (1559-1638) was pointed out by the Italian historian Pietro Redondi in his work Galileo Eretico (1983) as the direct influencer of the atomist theories of the Tuscan astronomer Galileo Galilei. Among his many works, the physician's most important writing was the treatise De meteoris microcosmi, published in Florence in 1621 and later republished in 1624 in Venice. In this book, Castro proposed, employing profound philosophical reflections, a new theory of diseases based on the Platonic analogy between the macrocosm and the microcosm. In this presentation, we will analyze how the Luso-Portuguese physician resorted to concepts originating from the Hippocratic and atomist traditions, such as the concept of pneuma/flatus and that of atomus, in the conception of his curious mannerist pathology. For this, we will trace a general overview of his medical theory and reflect on the place of these traditions within his thought.
The seminar is organized in collaboration between the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH/USP) and the Graduate Studies Program in History of the University of Brasília (PPGHIS/UnB).
