Postdoctorats au NIH

NIH History Post-Doc Opportunities

Call for applications

Deadline for applications: January 11, 2027

Under its newly relaunched Stetten Scholars program, the Office of NIH History and Stetten Museum (ONHM) seeks candidates for two 12-month post-doctoral positions.

These opportunities to research significant aspects of the history of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are open to US Citizens and Legal Permanent Residents who have earned a doctorate within the last five years. Although ABD applicants are welcome to apply, all requirements for the degree must be completed before the selectee can take up the position. Scholars selected in this round are expected to begin their tenure in the summer of 2027.

The position carries a stipend of approximately $70,000 per year plus health, dental, and vision insurance. Reimbursement for training-related travel and conference attendance may be provided if program funding allows.

Project scope: One of the opportunities will support a project that addresses any aspect of NIH history. The second, sponsored by NIH’s Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) in celebration of its 35th anniversary, must focus on the history of research on women’s health. Both positions will be administered through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), a program of the Department of Energy.

You can find the ORISE opportunity posting and application portal here.

The core of the application is a brief research proposal (up to 1200 words, not counting citations) that includes an outline of NIH’s role as an essential component of the research. The proposal must demonstrate mastery of standard historical methods as well as readiness to expand and deepen your expertise. Each application will be assessed by a panel of historians and subject-matter experts drawn from relevant NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices, using standard NIH review criteria:

  • Importance of the Research (in this case, of both the proposed historical work and its scientific subject)
  • Rigor and Feasibility
  • Expertise and Resources

Scholars selected for this opportunity will likewise receive mentorship from at least one biomedical researcher in a relevant NIH Institute, Center, or Office as well as from ONHM’s professional historians. Your project should be designed to take full advantage of this dual learning opportunity.

For questions: Our downloadable FAQ sheet is here.

You are welcome to email us at history@nih.gov with questions about our holdings. You can explore our archives and other historical resources via this website. However, since we are always getting new donations, we may also have relevant material that has not yet been catalogued and posted.

You are also strongly encouraged to contact ONHM’s Dr. Kristin Heitman, Deputy Director and Senior Historian, to discuss other resources that might strengthen your application.

We will be delighted to help you pursue your research about NIH and its history, even if you decide not apply for one of the Stetten Scholar positions.

Description du projet :

· CV (3 pages maximum, police Arial taille 11),

Post-doctoral Position in History of Medicine, Social Sciences, and Geography

Call for applications

Fixed-term, full-time: 11.01.2027 to 31.12.2029

Place of work: Université Paris Cité – CERMES3 Laboratory and Institut Pasteur

Project Description:

Archaeology of Disappeared Pathogens (ArchPath) reconstructs the interwoven biological and social histories of enteric fever (typhoid and paratyphoid B) endemism and eradication in post-war France. Drawing on the extensive phage-typing records of Institut Pasteur’s Enteric Bacterial Pathogens Laboratory (EBPL), the project combines cutting-edge historical, digital humanities, microbiological, and epidemiological analysis to map evolving typhoid and paratyphoid incidence and diversity in light of post-war population shifts, concerted eradication efforts, and rising antimicrobial usage. A key focus will be on the period between the end of World War Two and the Algerian War (1947-1962). ArchPath has five inquiry lines:

1. Where were persistent endemic hotspots of enteric disease transmission located?

2. Were endemic hotspots associated with distinct microbial strains (phage types)?

3. What are the socio-economic factors associated with endemicity and type incidence?

4. How were overall typhoid and paratyphoid B incidence and type diversity impacted by eradication campaigns, new technologies (e.g. vaccines, antimicrobials), and socio-historical disruptions (e.g. mass migration)?

5. How comprehensive was French public health surveillance?

ArchPath’s interrogation of enteric pathogens’ historical epidemiology, evolving biology, social drivers of observed biological shifts, and surveillance biases will reconstruct a pivotal moment of French public health expansion and cast light on core determinants of successful disease eradication. By merging the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of microbial and public health data, the project will also build important bridges between the humanities, the social sciences, microbiology, and public health. ArchPath is financed by the French Government’s Investissement d’Avenir programme, which is implemented by the Agence Nationale de Recherche (ANR) – ANR-21-EXES-0002, FIRE UP as part of its program Cross Cutting Edges (CCE).

Candidate Profile

The postdoctoral candidate will work closely with principle investigators Dr Claas Kirchhelle (CERMES3, https://www.bugsdrugs.org/) and Prof François-Xavier Weill (Institut Pasteur, https://research.pasteur.fr/fr/team/enteric-bacterial-pathogens/ ) on digitising source material, the spatio-temporal reconstruction of shifting disease hotspots, and the historical analysis (national and local archives, published sources, oral history interviews) of associated public health interventions. At least 6 months of the 2 year project will be spent within EBPL on the Institut Pasteur campus where the candidate will receive training in microbial data analysis.

Essential Requirements:

- Very good language skills in French and English

- A completed doctoral degree in history, the social sciences, geography, digital humanities, epidemiology, or a related discipline.

- Ability to travel in metropolitan France to conduct archival research, interviews, and present research results.

Desired Characteristics:

- Previous experience in digital humanities, database design, and/ or spatial-temporal trends analysis (e.g. via ArcGIS).

- Knowledge of the history of medicine, science, technology, environmental history, and /or modern and contemporary French history.

Application Procedure:

Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to contact claas.kirchhelle@inserm.fr ahead of a formal application.

For the formal application, candidates must send the following materials to claas.kirchhelle@inserm.fr by July 31st, 2026.

- CV (maximum 3 pages, Arial size 11),

- letter of motivation (1 page, Arial size 12),

- two writing samples (published article/ chapter),

- and contact details for two referees, who know the candidates work.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to participate in an online interview with PIs Kirchhelle and Weill. The interview will take place in early September 2026. The interview will be conducted in English.

Due to the sensitive nature of work on the Pasteur campus, the selected candidate will subsequently be vetted by the French security services. Only candidates, who have passed this vetting will be allowed to take up the post. The envisioned start date is January 11th, 2027.

Post-doctoral position in the history of global maternal health (F/M/D)

Call for applications

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies is recruiting a

CENTRE: Gender Center

CONTRACT: maximum duration contract (4 years)

ACTIVITY RATE: 100% 40 h / w

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 10th June, 2026

STARTING DATE: 01st September, 2026

Presentation of the Institute:

The Geneva Graduate Institute, founded in 1927, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for the study of international relations and development. Located in Geneva, Switzerland, the Institute offers a stimulating, multicultural and interdisciplinary academic environment. It offers masters and doctoral programmes, and conducts cutting-edge research on major global challenges.

Introduction of the project:

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position with the project “Global Maternity: The Politics of Knowledge Production at the World Health Organization, 1948-2008,” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and hosted at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. The Post-Doc (PD) will work with the Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Nicole Bourbonnais and Project Partner (PP) Dr. Ogechukwu Williams to explore how knowledge and expertise flowed into and out of the WHO, the tensions contained in the global governance of maternity, and the role of mothers themselves in responding to/intervening in these processes.

The project includes three pillars: Pillar 1: an overarching history of the WHO’s work on maternity during its first 60 years (conducted by the PI)
Pillar 2: 4 micro-historical case studies focusing on the fields of death (the production of maternal mortality statistics), birth (the evolution of pregnancy and childbirth guidance), breast (the regulation of infant feeding) and mind (the visibility/invisibility of maternal mental health) (PI, PP, and PD)
Pillar 3: public and policy-facing work aimed at inserting the project findings into contemporary discussions of motherhood, global health, and international organizations more broadly (PI, PP and PD).

Key responsibilities:

(1) Conducting and publishing original research on 2 of the 4 micro-historical case studies, on the subjects of birth (pregnancy and childbirth) and mind (maternal mental health). The idea is to narrow in on a specific pamphlet, guide, meeting, moment, person, or other micro-historical subject to explore in depth through the HQ archives in Geneva and archival, oral history, and/or ethnographic research in a particular location (ex a maternity ward in X country where the guide was/is used, the location of a key meeting…etc). The specific micro-historical subjects and sites of research are flexible, but should be based geographically in either Asia, Africa, or Central/South America and will ideally compliment rather than replicate the regional expertise of the PI (the Anglophone Caribbean) and PP (Nigeria). Academic outputs for the PD will include 3 solo-authored journal articles (one on each of the 2 case studies and one reflecting on the use of micro-history from a methodological perspective), as well as a co-authored introduction to an edited volume.

(2) Taking the lead on Pillar 3 (policy and public-facing work of the project). This will include organization of three events: a project launch event in Year 1, a 2-day research-policy workshop in Year 3, and a final public event in Year 4 presenting the project results. The PD will also take the lead in putting together a 4-part podcast series covering the four case studies (death, birth, breast and mind, 1 hour each), released in Year 4.

To be successful in this role, you should have:

A doctoral degree in history or a related field of relevance to the position, in hand by the agreed start date of the position (ideally Sept 1, 2026 at the latest)

Experience conducting archival and/or oral history research

Excellent knowledge of English and any other languages needed for the proposed sites of archival/field research

Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
Assets :
  • Past research on the history of global health, the history of reproduction/motherhood, the history of international organizations, and/or micro-history
  • Theoretical knowledge of reproduction, motherhood, governance, and health from an interdisciplinary perspective
  • Previous experience organizing events and working with policymakers/the public
  • Previous experience in podcasting or other creative mediums

What you can expect from us:

  • Working with a large international community from diverse backgrounds.
  • Interesting job with varied tasks.
  • Good atmosphere in a small team. At the heart of International Geneva.

How to apply

We invite you to submit a complete file in PDF format with the following documents:

Date limite : 19 juin 2026

Call for applications

The Ohio State University Health Sciences Library Medical Heritage Center (MHC) is seeking applicants for its George W. Paulson, MD, Scholar-in-Residence Program for a flexible time period between September 1, 2026 and August 31, 2027.

The Scholar-in-Residence Program provides a stipend up to $5,000 to support the activities of the scholar. This funding is provided by the Columbus Medical Association Foundation endowment for the MHC and can cover but is not limited to equipment, support staff and publication costs. Scholars also receive touchdown workspace, limited storage for materials, and shared large office equipment. All funds must be spent in the awarded year. A one-year renewal may be available upon request, depending on the scope of the project.

Suitable potential scholars can come from a variety of backgrounds (e.g., students, clinician historians, PhD historians) and each application will be reviewed based upon the quality of the application and proposed use of historical collections. Preference will be given to scholars whose research is directed toward local or regional medical historic issues. Use of the in-house archival and rare book collections is suggested but not limited to the collections of the Medical Heritage Center. The intent to publish in nationally-known presses and peer-reviewed journals is preferred. Scholars will be expected to provide a mid-point and final report discussing the progress and result of the residency project. At least one presentation and publication are expected from a successful scholar residency.

Doctorats en histoire des sages-femmes en Belgique

PhD positions in the history of midwifery

Call for applications

Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the University of Antwerp.

The PhD projects are part of a larger FWO-funded research project 'Midwifery roles and practices in Belgium and the Belgian Congo (1908-1960)', coordinated by Jolien Gijbels and Margot Luyckfasseel. The project as a whole aims to generate fresh insight into the continuing importance of midwives in reproductive care in Belgium and the Belgian Congo between 1908 and 1960. Although women across the globe handled the lion’s share of deliveries and combined different reproductive care roles far into the 20th century, a comprehensive history of their variety of practices and roles still needs to be written. To this end, the PhD researchers will collaborate closely with one another to develop a practice-oriented methodology that prioritizes source material offering insights into midwifery practices and the perspective of midwives, and to examine the mutual influences between Belgium and the Belgian Congo.

The PhD researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel will work on the Belgian case and will be supervised by Jolien Gijbels, Margot Luyckfasseel and Margo De Koster. The PhD researcher at the University of
Antwerp will focus on the Belgian Congo and will be supervised by Margot Luyckfasseel, Jolien Gijbels and Amandine Lauro.

Important dates:

·                Interviews will be held on July 7.

·                The planned start date is November 1 or as soon as possible after that date.

Les espaces de la santé

Phd opportunity "Spaces of Health: Connecting Past and Present Experiences of Health and Wellbeing in Heritage"

Call for applications

Historic England and the University of Leeds are pleased to announce the availability of a fully funded, four-year Collaborative Doctoral Studentship from 1 October 2026 under the AHRC’s Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships (CDP) scheme.

From historic hospital buildings to medical museums, England’s health heritage has a powerful role to play in supporting wellbeing — but we don’t yet know how. This PhD project will uncover how these unique sites can draw on their own histories and collections to benefit communities now and in the future. It explores how England’s rich medical and healthcare heritage can be used to support public health and community wellbeing today. While heritage engagement is widely recognised as beneficial, we know surprisingly little about how sites with historic ties to medicine – from former hospital buildings and clinics to medical museums – might offer unique opportunities for promoting wellbeing. These health-related heritage institutions (HRHIs) have distinctive histories that shape how people experience them, yet their potential as public health assets remains underexplored.

The research project will investigate that potential through a national study of HRHIs in England, complemented by at least two in-depth case studies with additional project partners: St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Thackray Museum of Medicine. This combination of breadth and depth will allow the researcher to map the landscape of England’s health heritage while also examining, up close, how specific institutions engage visitors, interpret their histories, and design wellbeing-focused programmes.

Working with archives, collections, heritage professionals, and community participants, the project will develop new insights into how HRHIs can use their unique legacies to benefit local communities.

You will have the opportunity to shape the project based on your interests, background and experience. Indicative research questions might include:

  • How can HRHIs work most effectively to promote community and audience health and wellbeing?
  • How and why do historic and contemporary associations of places with healthcare impact on audience and community experience?
  • What are the most effective approaches that HRHIs can take to promote health through their collections?
  • What can we extrapolate from the experience of HRHIs to inform practice across the wider heritage sector?

The project will be jointly supervised by researchers at the University of Leeds (James Stark and Helen Graham) and heritage professionals at Historic England (Linda Monckton and Simon Taylor).

The student will be expected to spend time at both Historic England and the University of Leeds, as well as becoming part of the wider cohort of CDP funded students across the UK under the AHRC’s CDP scheme.

This PhD opportunity provides full tuition fees, a maintenance stipend set at UKRI rates (£21,805 for full-time in 2026/27, pro-rata for part-time candidates), and generous travel and training allowances, and is open to both Home and International fee applicants. You can find full details of the award and application process here.

Deadline: 5pm (UK time) 1 May 2026, with interviews for shortlisted candidates in early June.
