Colloquia Ceranea VIII

Colloquia Ceranea VIII

Call for papers

in a hybrid format at the University of Łódź, Poland, from 7 to 9 May 2026.

Our aim is, among other things, to explore the history of medicine in Late Antiquity and Byzantium in the broadest possible context, with a special focus on how ancient and Byzantine dietetics and materia medica can contribute to contemporary science.

The plenary speakers will be:

Dr Effie Photos-Jones (University of Glasgow)

Dr Chryssa Bourbou (Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania, Hellenic Ministry of Culture)

While individual paper submissions are welcome, we particularly encourage proposals for thematic panels that bring together multiple contributions around a shared research question or debate. In addition, participants are invited to take part in the following round tables:

• Multidisciplinary Approaches to Diet: Application of Past Results to the Present
• Multidisciplinary Approaches to Pharmacotherapeutics: Application of Past Results to the Present
• Environmental Lessons from the Past for Modern Food Production and Wellbeing
• AI for Unlocking Byzantine Medical Manuscripts

The submission deadline is 28 February 2026.

You will find all details concerning the event on the Ceraneum Centre’s website:

This week we shared the plenary lecture by Dr Manuela Marai, entitled Pharmaceuticals from the Mineral and Animal Kingdoms: Considerations on Ancient and Modern Uses. In the coming days, we will be publishing conference panels devoted to various aspects of the history of medicine.
