The RCN was founded in 1916. Just three years later, the College produced its first report on pay, showing the poor salaries and conditions of employment for many nurses across the UK. Today, as we celebrate the vital role of nurses in the COVID-19 pandemic, pay remains a hotly debated topic and the RCN is calling for a 12.5% pay increase across the NHS.

Join us for a fireside chat with RCN President and historian of nursing Professor Anne Marie Rafferty to hear more about how nurses have pushed for change over the years. In 1969, for example, the RCN Raise the Roof campaign was supported by tens of thousands of nurses, many of whom donated an hour’s pay to show their support. It led to the biggest single increase in nurses’ pay throughout history: 20%. Find out more about how nurses have engaged in activism over the years, and why politics remains an important part of nursing knowledge.
