This major Wellcome Trust funded project will re-examine the emergence of the scientific study of human sexuality in the nineteenth century and reconsiders how modern understandings of sexuality were constructed. From the 1890s, medical doctors argued that a properly scientific understanding of sexuality required input from additional areas of knowledge (e.g. anthropology, biology, history, literature, psychology, sociology ). We explore the emergence of a cross-disciplinary 'sexual science' driven by dissatisfaction with exclusively medical approaches. For further information, see http://rethinkingsexology.exeter.ac.uk .

Two full time, three-year postdoctoral fellowships are offered from 1stSeptember 2016 until 31st August 2019. Applicants from all humanities and social science fields, engaging with a wide range of approaches, themes and sources are welcome.

Postdoctoral fellows will be required to carry out archival research, work towards the completion of a monograph of international standing (or equivalent), lead the development of a thematic area through hosting workshops/a conference, produce appropriate publications (such as a thematic journal issue or edited volume), and assist with the planning and running of the project's public engagement and impact work.

Applicants are therefore asked to outline a major 3-year research project on an aspect of the history of sexual science, ca. 1890-1940, that speaks to one or more of the aims of the Rethinking Sexology project and submit this as part of their application, along with a cover letter and CV. The proposed research projects must have a historical focus, but we explicitly welcome applications from researchers across disciplines, including but not limited to English and History. Further details can be found in the accompanying job description.

Applicants are welcome to contact the principal investigators, Professor Kate Fisher k.fisher@exeter.ac.uk and Dr Jana Funke J.Funke@exeter.ac.uk to discuss their research proposals.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
