The Museum of Health Care at Kingston, located in the Ann Baillie Building (National Historic Site) at 32 George St., is looking for a Collections Technician to work on our Textile Storage project. This project includes cleaning textiles, determining appropriate storage methods for pieces, and creating mounts and other storage solutions (incl. rolled storage), as well as inventorying and cataloguing pieces. Focus will be on the handling and management of nursing uniforms, however the Collections Technician will work directly with an extensive collection of medical and health care objects and archival documents under the direction and supervision of the Collections Manager.
This MAP-funded project is a full-time 10-week/50 day contract running from September through November 2013.
Wage: $13/hr
The chosen candidate will have the following competencies and qualities:
Degree or diploma in Museum Studies and/or equivalent work experience
Demonstrated experience working with museum collections, including:
- cataloging (familiarity with InMagic is preferred) and other record keeping
- mount making
- artefact cleaning
- collections inventory
- artefact research
- Detail-oriented and precise
- Strong organizational and time-management skills and ability to multi-task
- Works well on their own with minimal supervision
- Excellent English-language communication skills
- Experience with digital photography and photo editing will be considered an asset
