This exhibit is based on the life a practitioner—Dr. Georges Lefebvre—who graduated from McGill in 1944 (MDCM) and practiced in Huntingdon, Quebec, for over 40 years. It includes a number of medical instruments used or collected by Dr. Lefebvre during this time, which he donated to the Maude Abbott Medical Museum, as well as a number of books related to medical practice in a rural setting from the Osler Library of the History of Medicine.

Presented in conjunction with the Maude Abbott Medical Museum.

Applications are invited for a full-time, without-term Lectureship/Senior Lectureship in The History of Medicine (post-1800). We are investing in our history provision and this appointment will provide the opportunity to be part of an exciting new initiative.

Psychedelics fell from medical grace nearly half a century ago, but recent activity suggests that some researchers have ‘high hopes’ for their return. Over sixty years ago Albert Hofmann at Sandoz Pharmaceutical Laboratories in Switzerland first synthesized LSD and personally experienced its effects in 1943. Over the next 15 years, over a thousand articles appeared in medical and scientific publications based on LSD research. By the mid-1960s, LSD research ground to halt as it had become synonymous with countercultural activities, hedonism, and drug abuse. Recently, that situation has started to change. A new generation of researchers has taken up the torch with an eye to resurrecting the psychedelic science of the 1950s, particularly along the paths of addiction research and palliative care. Will this new group of enthusiasts be more nimble, or have cultural circumstances changed sufficiently to embrace psychedelics anew?

Thinking in Cases: On and Beyond the Couch

A Half-Day Symposium

John Forrester tragically died in November 2015. His long-standing research project, ‘thinking in cases’ was an attempt to theorise the particular kind of thinking that pertains to psychoanalysis and psychotherapy; different from ‘scientific’ and deductive reasoning but, he asserted, a valid form of knowledge all the same. Can one move from a textured particularity, like that in Freud’s famous cases, to a level of reliable generality? In his last book, to be published in October, Forrester teases out the meanings of the psychoanalytic case, how to characterise it and account for it as a particular kind of thinking and writing. While he was principally concerned with analysing the style of reasoning that was dominant in psychoanalysis and related disciplines, Forrester’s path-breaking account of thinking in cases will be of great interest to scholars, students and professionals across a wide range of disciplines, from history, law and the social sciences to medicine, clinical practice and the talking therapies. This conference brings together speakers from a range of disciplines to debate the pros and cons of ‘thinking in cases’.

PAPER PROPOSALS: This is the third biennial, international, interdisciplinary TALKING BODIES conference, and 20-minute papers are invited on topics related to its themes. Scholars, practitioners, researchers and postgraduate students from a wide range of disciplines (art, performance, art history, social history, and history of science, medical humanities, literary criticism, theology, (eco)feminism, political theory, medicine, jurisprudence, and more) are invited to submit proposals. Questions to be considered include (but are absolutely not limited to):

• Where do gender and ideology intersect on the site of ‘the body’?
• How do visual artists represent the complexities of the embodied self? Or, how can writers, performers, or musicians do so?
• How does the idea of the ‘taboo’ impact on self-perception? How do writers and artists articulate that taboo?
• How is sexual identity articulated by and in the body?
• What happens when the ‘talking body’ conflicts with the ‘talking mind’?
• How do (consensual or non-consensual) body modifications silence the body, or ‘allow’ it to ‘talk’?
• What relationships do erotica, porn and the ‘obscene’ have with the embodied self?
• How does representation of the body facilitate political activism?
• Is language ever sufficient in talking about bodies?

In addition to the conference presentations, there will be a ‘Marketplace’ with book and craft stalls; our legendary feminist pub quiz; a vegetarian conference banquet; and much more!

Séminaire de recherche 2016/2017

Le séminaire « approches et méthodes, sciences, technologies, santé et sociétés (ST2S)» est un lieu d’échanges et de discussions autour des manières d’étudier les sciences, technologies, et santé en société. Il réunit de manière originale et cohérente des chercheurs issus de filières aussi diverses que la médecine, l’histoire, la médecine, la philosophie, le droit ou encore la biologie. Pluridisciplinaire, il est donc ouvert à toute personne désireuse de dépasser les clivages institutionnels et satisfaire sa curiosité intellectuelle !

Le séminaire a une double vocation :

– d’une part permettre aux chercheurs d’exposer, de soumettre et de mettre à l’épreuve des aspects méthodologiques de leur travail : les sources mobilisées, leurs techniques d’écriture ou encore les approches et concepts expérimentés.

– d’autre part, de présenter et de partager des approches nouvelles ou peu mobilisés, et ainsi de donner l’opportunité aux participants de découvrir des thèmes de recherche novateurs.

Le caractère large de ces objectifs ne doit pas cacher l’enjeu principal de ces séances qui est d’offrir un espace nous permettant d’interroger ensemble nos manières de faire et les méthodes que nous mobilisons. Par là, le séminaire représente très concrètement une « plate-forme » apte à donner aux chercheurs de degrés divers la possibilité d’être écoutés, relus et critiqués au sens étymologique du terme afin de mettre à l’épreuve de leurs pairs les pistes les plus récentes de leurs recherches.

Les séances auront lieu : les mercredis de 13h à 15h à la bibliothèque du DHVS à l’Institut d’anatomie (Hôpital Civil).
