From heroin to gambling, from alcohol to love, HOOKED explores the history of addiction. It invites you to consider the stereotypes attached to addiction and how all of us can be vulnerable to it.

Exploring pills, drink, snuff and cigarettes, we uncover the many faces of addiction and the many attempts to combat it. We explore the dark origins of substance addiction in the western world – rooted deeply in colonialism and slavery.

Featuring rare books, historical objects, artworks, interviews and digital interactives, the exhibition considers the meaning of addiction, its causes and the stigma attached to being addicted.



This exhibition contains some racist and xenophobic historic materials.

The Institut des humanités en médecine (CHUV-UniL) invites applications for a postdoc position (3-4 years, 80-100%) in the history of medicine. The position will start on October 1, 2025 (negotiable, latest possible starting date: 1 February 2026).
The postdoc will contribute to the SNSF Starting Grant project (primary investigator: Felix E. Rietmann) “Pediatric Drugs since 1945: From Local Practice to Global Politics.” The project examines the clinical use, administrative regulation, and scientific marketing of pediatric pharmaceuticals in (and beyond) Switzerland across the second half of the twentieth century.
The postdoc will conduct his or her own research projects within the above-mentioned framework, focusing on the global history of pediatric pharmaceuticals. In close collaboration with the PI, the postdoc will conduct case studies of selected pharmaceuticals tracing the international and global development of a pediatric pharmaceutical market since the post-World War II period.
 

Requirements:
⁃ Doctorate in History or equivalent degree
⁃ Experience in the history of global health, the history of pharmaceuticals, or related areas of scholarship
⁃ Proficiency (written and spoken) in German and/or French, and good knowledge of English
⁃ Willingness to work in a collaborative environment and a team-based research project
What we offer:
⁃ 2 x 2-year employment contract to work in Lausanne (total 4 years at 80% and approximately 3 years and 6 months at 100%).
⁃ A salary paid according to the SNSF rates for postdoctoral students (approx. 83’000 CHF at 100% for the first year) with yearly pay increases
⁃ Excellent working conditions in a stimulating multi-disciplinary research environment

L’autre désinstitutionnalisation explore l’histoire de la désinstitutionnalisation de la déficience intellectuelle au Québec. Depuis les années 1960, ce vaste mouvement de réforme a chamboulé l’organisation des services psychiatriques. Les longues périodes d’hospitalisation, vivement critiquées, devaient prendre fin. Désormais, l’institution ne serait plus un milieu de vie, mais bien seulement un lieu de traitement.

Alors que la réforme bat son plein, les patientes et patients ayant un diagnostic de déficience intellectuelle tardent à quitter l’hôpital. D’année en année, ils représentent une part de plus en plus grande de la population institutionnalisée. À l’Hôpital Saint-Michel-Archange de Beauport, en banlieue de Québec, 19 % des patients et patientes avaient un diagnostic de déficience intellectuelle en 1970 contre 15 % en 1960.

Comment furent vécues ces années de réforme par cette population dont la réintégration se fit attendre ? L’autre désinstitutionnalisation répond à cette question en plongeant dans les dossiers médicaux de neuf patients et cinq patientes de l’Hôpital Saint-Michel-Archange. C’est par les traces que laissèrent dans les archives de cet établissement Claude, Gaston, André, Bernard, Juliette, Monique, Denise, Raymond, Marie, Serge, Fernand, Réal, Marguerite et Pierre que cet ouvrage entend contribuer à une histoire par le bas de la déficience intellectuelle.

CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

This VivaMente Conference examines the interplay between medicine and society in the Late Medieval period through an interdisciplinary lens, assessing how medical theories, practices, and language both shaped and were shaped by philosophical, theological, and political thought. It will explore how concepts such as diagnosis, prognosis, and health served as conceptual bridges connecting medicine with philosophy and theology, shaping broader debates on uncertainty, anomalies, and crisis management. The conference speakers will investigate how medical theories, practices, and language both influenced and were influenced by philosophical, theological, and political thought.

It will explore how concepts such as diagnosis, prognosis, and health served as conceptual bridges connecting medicine with philosophy and theology, shaping broader debates on uncertainty, anomalies, and crisis management. The conference speakers will investigate how medical theories, practices, and language both influenced and were influenced by philosophical, theological, and political thought. Specifically, it will address the following key themes:

• The interplay between medicine and natural philosophy and the integration of classical Greco-Roman medical knowledge with Arabic and Jewish traditions.
• Medical knowledge at the Faculties of Arts and its role as a preparatory discipline for philosophical and theological education
• Medical metaphors, language, and practices in medieval political theory.
• The contribution of medicine and physiognomy to medieval ideas of ideal rulership and the legitimacy of power
• Medical doctrines in ethical and political debates: rational techniques to understand and regulate the interactions between bodily and emotional dynamics.
• Rationalization of diseases and epidemics at the crossroad of medicine, philosophy, and social concerns.
• Extraordinary biological phenomena, particularly congenital anomalies, monstrous birth, and hereditary conditions.

The Institut des humanités en médecine (CHUV-UniL) invites applications for a fully funded PhD-Position (4 years, 100%) in the history of medicine. The position will start on October 1, 2025 (negotiable, latest possible starting date: 1 February 2026).

The PhD-thesis will be realized in the framework of the SNSF Starting Grant project (primary investigator: Felix E. Rietmann) “Pediatric Drugs since 1945: From Local Practice to Global Politics.” The project examines the clinical use, administrative regulation, and scientific marketing of pediatric pharmaceuticals in (and beyond) Switzerland across the second half of the twentieth century.
The PhD-student will conduct his or her own independent research project within the above-mentioned framework, focusing on the interplay between the management of pediatric diseases and the evolving pharmaceutical market. Potential topics include but are not limited to the history of antibiotics and pediatric infectious diseases, the history of nutrition in children, or the history of psychopharmaceuticals and child psychiatric conditions.

Argumentaire

La médecine constitue dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine un fait culturel global dont l’influence sur la philosophie ou la littérature, tout particulièrement la tragédie, a été bien documentée et étudiée. Les Pères de l’Église, nourris par l’éducation gréco-romaine, ne pouvaient pas rester insensibles à cette influence, d’autant que le motif médical se lit aussi bien dans les Évangiles que dans les Épîtres de Paul par exemple. L’image du Christ médecin constitue ainsi une image structurante de l’imaginaire chrétien dans l’Antiquité comme en témoignent l’art paléochrétien aussi bien que l’exégèse patristique. Par ailleurs, le savoir médical joue chez les Pères de l’Église un rôle décisif aussi bien dans leurs réflexions anthropologiques, par exemple sur le rapport de l’âme et du corps, que dans le travail d’élaboration dogmatique sur des questions comme la résurrection des corps, l’Incarnation ou le salut. Si cette question des connaissances médicales au sein la tradition patristique a donné lieu à d’importants colloques et à d’importantes synthèses à la fin des années 1990 et au début des années 2000, il importe sans doute d’établir aujourd’hui un nouvel état de la question, vingt ans plus tard, à l’aune des apports récents dans notre connaissance de la médecine antique et du christianisme antique. Tel sera l’enjeu de ces XXIXes Rencontres de Patristique.

L’histoire du corps est aujourd’hui un domaine privilégié de la recherche. Si elle est redevable à d’autres sciences sociales, en premier lieu l’anthropologie, l’ethnologie et la sociologie, elle a existé bien avant d’être identifiée en tant que telle et certaines manières de faire l’histoire l’ont irriguée sans le savoir　: elle apparaît donc comme un organisme encore en développement et doué d’un appétit qui lui fait franchir les barrières consacrées entre périodes ou disciplines, en attirant à elle des sources de plus en plus diverses. Sa relative jeunesse peut se mesurer à sa capacité d’osmose avec d’autres branches de l’histoire, avec qui elle a un objet central en partage qu’aucune n’épuise. Ses intersections sont évidentes avec l’histoire de la médecine et celle de l’alimentation, mais la littérature et l’iconographie sont aussi des observatoires potentiels de représentations, de même que les textes philosophiques offrant force matière à l’exploration des conceptions du corps, notamment de ses relations avec l'âme.

Les dernières synthèses sur l'histoire du corps n'accordant qu'une part limitée au Moyen Âge, malgré l’influence tutélaire de Marc Bloch et de Jacques Le Goff, un volume consacré à cette période s'impose comme une nécessité. On rend donc ici compte des origines et des développements de cette histoire, en envisageant la question du corps au Moyen Âge dans toutes ses dimensions, physiques, mais aussi physiologiques, artistiques, religieuses et spirituelles, sociales et politiques.

Modalités du Prix de thèse

Outre la qualité du travail de recherche produit, les critères de valorisation des thèses demeurent les mêmes que les années précédentes :
1) le lien thématique de la thèse avec le programme scientifique du GESTES (travail ou santé au travail) et
2) le caractère interdisciplinaire de la thèse.


Les candidatures doivent être envoyées à l’adresse gestes@mshparisnord.fr au plus tard le mardi 15 juillet 2025. Les pièces à produire pour la constitution d’un dossier de candidature valide sont les suivantes : Un résumé de la thèse (entre 15 000 et 20 000 signes espaces compris) mettant en évidence le degré d’interdisciplinarité du travail doctoral. Cette interdisciplinarité peut concerner l’objet d’étude ou les méthodes. Elle peut prendre une forme institutionnelle (direction de la thèse, membres du jury…). Elle peut également se manifester dans la revue de littérature, organisant un dialogue avec des publications d’autres disciplines.

Les thèses candidates peuvent avoir été soutenues dans tout établissement d’enseignement supérieur français et doivent l’avoir été au cours de l’année civile précédant celle de l’attribution du Prix.

La récompense consiste en un chèque de 1500 euros pour la/le lauréat·e.
