Empire et lèpre au Bengale colonial

Empire and Leprosy in Colonial Bengal

Apalak Das

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Routledge India; 1st edition (March 12, 2024)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 252 pages

Leprosy, widely mentioned in different religious texts and ancient scriptures, is the oldest scourge of humankind. Cases of leprosy continue to be found across the world as the most crucial health problem, especially in India and Brazil. There are a few maladies that eventually turn into social disquiets, and leprosy is undoubtedly one of them. This book traces the dynamics of the interface between colonial policy on leprosy and religion, science and society in Bengal from the mid-nineteenth to the first half of the twentieth centuries. It explores how the idea of ‘degeneration’ and the ‘desolates’ shaped the colonial legality of segregating ‘lepers’ in Indian society. The author also delves into the treatments of leprosy that were often transfigured from ‘original’ English texts, written by American or British medical professionals, into Bengali.

Rich in archival resources, this book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of history, Indian history, public health, social history, medical humanities, medical history and colonial history.

Disability History: New Perspectives and Interdisciplinary Approaches

Call for papers

November 6, 2024 – November 8, 2024
In-person symposium
Münster (Germany)

In recent years, the exploration of disability has increasingly gained importance within historical research. Disability history has particularly emphasized the social and cultural dimensions of disabilities, advocating for the recognition of disability as a central historical category alongside others such as gender or class. This perspective highlights how societal norms, values, and institutions shape the experiences and identities of people with disabilities. It questions traditional narratives in which the experiences of disabled people have been marginalized or overlooked, and advocates for an inclusive and nuanced historical analysis of the non-normative mind and body.

The dynamics and development of this field of research in recent years, its interdisciplinary reach, and its potential to broaden our historical understanding of human diversity are among its most important characteristics.[1] At the same time, there are still many unexplored topics, unused sources, and promising approaches that have the potential to enrich historiography with new perspectives. The upcoming symposium intends to address these very topics of disability history.

We welcome submissions that delve into the historical aspects of social negotiation processes surrounding disability. We welcome both regional and national case studies as well as transnational perspectives. Furthermore, we are particularly interested in the interactions between various disciplinary approaches and the intersections of disability history with visual history, microhistory, the history of knowledge, medical history, and the history of education.

Among others, we are interested in the following questions:

  • How was disability conceptualized outside of Western societies?
  • What alternative perspectives can be found that challenge Euro-American concepts of normality and ablebodiedness?
  • How did conceptions of disability circulate among different social actors? What factors and events enabled or hampered exchanges and transfers?
  • What forms of cooperation and antagonisms between groups, organizations, and associations can be found on a national and international level?
  • What strategies of empowerment can be found in the context of institutional settings?
  • What role do self-testimonies of people with disabilities play in reconstructing those life-worlds?
  • How did visual arts and media contribute to the conception of disability, and how can they be interrogated as mirrors of societal norms and perceptions?

The conference language is both German and English, with abstracts provided in both languages.

We welcome scholars from all levels of academia and encourage contributions spanning the full spectrum of academic disciplines. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered by the organizers, and catering and a conference dinner will be provided. However, expenses must be advanced and will be reimbursed. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. Also, please indicate any necessary support requirements (e.g., sign language interpreter) in your application so we can arrange for early booking. Please send us an abstract of the planned contribution of approximately 250 words along with a short biography to the following email addresses by April 30, 2024:

L'épidémie de zika au Brésil

Viruses and Reproductive Injustice: Zika in Brazil

Ilana Löwy

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Johns Hopkins University Press (January 30, 2024)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 294 pages
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1421447919

Brazil's Zika outbreak revealed extreme health disparities and reproductive injustice across racial and socioeconomic lines.

Brazil's 2015 Zika outbreak led to severe illnesses for many and the birth of several thousands of children with severe brain damage. Even though mosquito-borne diseases such as the Zika virus affect people across society, these children were born almost exclusively to poor, and usually non-white, women. In Viruses and Reproductive Injustice, Ilana Löwy explores the complicated health disparities and reproductive injustice that led to these cases of congenital Zika syndrome.

Löwy examines the history of the outbreak in Brazil and connects it to broader questions concerning reproductive rights, the medical science behind understanding new pathogens, and the role of international health organizations in battling—or ignoring—public health crises. The explanation behind the strongly skewed distribution of cases among social classes was far from straightforward or obvious during the Zika outbreak. Löwy argues that the disproportionate effect of Zika on births among the poor is primarily a function of dramatic disparities in access to contraception and prenatal care, as well as Brazil's anti-abortion laws: only wealthier women have access to safe abortions. This is a book about the changing meaning of an infectious disease outbreak and a haunting demonstration that an epidemic is both a biological and a political event produced by the complicated entanglement of humans, viruses, and mosquitoes.

Les femmes des infirmeries de guerre d'Anna Freud

The Women of Anna Freud's War Nurseries: Their Life and Work

Christiane Ludwig-Koerner

Routledge
Published : February 2024
Cover : Paperback
Pages : 232
ISBN 13 : 9781032517544

In this volume, Christiane Ludwig-Körner describes the lives and work of the staff members of the War Nurseries set up and run by Anna Freud and Dorothy Burlingham during the Second World War.

The Women of Anna Freud’s War Nurseries looks in turn at each of the women who helped run the homes in Hampstead: Alice Goldberger, Sophie and Gertrud Dann, Manna Friedmann, Anneliese Schnurmann, Ilse Hellman and Hansi Kennedy. As young women, they narrowly escaped the Holocaust and dedicated themselves to children who had suffered the same fate. Few arrived with any knowledge of psychoanalytic theories or methods; this volume charts their education from Freud and Burlingham, which eventually lead to both Freud’s independent psychoanalytic child therapy training and the young women’s embarkment on careers as professional analysts. Using case studies throughout, Ludwig-Körner illustrates the intense relationships often experienced between children in care and their analysts/carers, and uses the children of the War Nurseries as examples for how contemporary psychoanalysts can work with children today.

This book is essential reading for psychoanalysts, especially those working with children, as well as scholars and professionals interested in the history of child analysts and childhood trauma.

Une histoire sociale de l'insuffisance rénale et de ses traitements

The Body's Keepers: A Social History of Kidney Failure and Its Treatments

Paul L. Kimmel M.D.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Mayo Clinic Press (February 13, 2024)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 448 pages
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 979-8887700304

A remarkable account of the kidney and the scientific, medical, and health evolution tied to our understanding of it.

The kidney is an extraordinary organ – in many ways the regulator, the metronome, the keeper of the human body’s delicate equilibrium. On a given day, minute by minute, it purifies the body of toxins it encounters from diet, climate, activity, and injury. It allows us to be and to move in the world. And yet most of us know so very little about these extraordinary vessels nestled in our bodies – and indeed millions of us only really learn about them when they stop working. Nearly a million Americans every year have end stage kidney disease, about 37 million have some form of chronic kidney disease. And it is an incredibly common universe of challenge and ailment that, until relatively recently, would simply kill those afflicted with it.

Renowned nephrologist Dr. Paul Kimmel takes us on an eye-opening journey through the history of kidney disease, dialysis, and transplantation. Drawing on both his extensive research and decades of experience in the field, he explains the development of treatments, technologies, and medical practices that have advanced the care of patients with kidney disease. Kimmel illuminates the impact of medical advances on the lives of those suffering from this debilitating disease and offers a clear understanding of the challenges that remain.

The Body’s Keepers also reveals the inequities and injustices at the heart of America's healthcare system. Filled with case studies, personal histories, and first-hand accounts, the book reveals the shocking truth about the exploitation of vulnerable populations in the pursuit of profit. Kimmel examines how disparities in access to care have led to life-threatening consequences for many Americans. He also looks at the ways in which the medical industry has profited from the suffering of others, and how the path to health equity is still far from being realized. With unflinching honesty and a passionate commitment to social justice, his book is an essential read for anyone looking to understand the complexities of modern healthcare.
