Architecture, urbanisme et hygiène dans le Paris postrévolutionnaire

Ideals of the Body. Architecture, Urbanism, and Hygiene in Postrevolutionary Paris

Sun-Young Park

University of Pittsburgh Press
2018

Modern hygienic urbanism originated in the airy boulevards, public parks, and sewer system that transformed the Parisian cityscape in the mid-nineteenth century. Yet these well-known developments in public health built on a previous moment of anxiety about the hygiene of modern city dwellers. Amid fears of national decline that accompanied the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire, efforts to modernize Paris between 1800 and 1850 focused not on grand and comprehensive structural reforms, but rather on improving the bodily and mental fitness of the individual citizen. These forgotten efforts to renew and reform the physical and moral health of the urban subject found expression in the built environment of the city—in the gymnasiums, swimming pools, and green spaces of private and public institutions, from the pedagogical to the recreational. Sun-Young Park reveals how these anxieties about health and social order, which manifested in emerging ideals of the body, created a uniquely spatial and urban experience of modernity in the postrevolutionary capital, one profoundly impacted by hygiene, mobility, productivity, leisure, spectacle, and technology.

Stephen and Sandra Joffe Fellowship in the History of Medicine

Call for applications

The Program in the History of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center seeks an outstanding candidate for a two-year fellow in the history of medicine to start July 1st, 2019. The appointee will be proposed for an academic title of Instructor of Biomedical Sciences. This is expected to be a joint venture with the History Department at the University of California Los Angeles. Applications from individuals who study questions relevant to the history of medicine in the modern period are welcome, with preference for deeply researched projects that emphasize the history of human disease and medical practice, and which would benefit especially from being situated in a contemporary medical institution. (The PhD must be in hand before the fellowship’s start date.) The appointee, with the expectation of a concurrent appointment as Visiting Faculty in UCLA’s Department of History, will enjoy substantial time to pursue research, and will have teaching assignments in both institutions.

The Program in the History of Medicine, now in its second year, is a unit within the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Division of Graduate Research Education, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The Medical Center, in the heart of Los Angeles, is one of the nation’s leading non-profit medical institutions. It is a teaching hospital of UCLA and has a large academic enterprise with substantial extramural funding.

The Cedars-Sinai’s Program in the History of Medicine explores the body and its cultural contexts from the early modern period to the present. Researchers cover a wide range of sub-disciplines and seek to educate the medical community about the shapes that medicine and science have taken across the centuries. Our inquiry is bound by a commitment to rigor and experiment, and an ecumenical embrace of methods, disciplines, and evidence. Through original research and educational programming, we seek to understand the knowledge of the past with reference to the knowledge we generate today. Our Joffe Fellow would be joining a growing history of medicine team.

The Program is cooperating with the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine field in UCLA’s Department of History to identify and develop research and pedagogical initiatives in the history of medicine. Upon successful appointment as visiting faculty, the researcher will have academic privileges at UCLA.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.

Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Candidates are requested to address the following materials to Dr. Leon Fine, Director of the Cedars-Sinai Program in the History of Medicine:
  • a cover letter

L'eugénisme en Russie

With and Without Galton: Vasilii Florinskii and the Fate of Eugenics in Russia

Nikolai Krementsov

OpenBook Publishers
2018

In 1865, British polymath Francis Galton published his initial thoughts about the scientific field that would become ‘eugenics.’ The same year, Russian physician Vasilii Florinskii addressed similar issues in a sizeable treatise, entitled Human Perfection and Degeneration. Initially unheralded, Florinskii’s book would go on to have a remarkable afterlife in twentieth- and twenty-first-century Russia.

In this lucid and insightful work, Nikolai Krementsov argues that the concept of eugenics brings together ideas, values, practices, and fears energised by a focus on the future. It has proven so seductive to different groups over time because it provides a way to grapple with fundamental existential questions of human nature and destiny. With and Without Galton develops this argument by tracing the life-story of Florinskii’s monograph from its uncelebrated arrival amid the Russian empire’s Great Reforms, to its reissue after the Bolshevik Revolution, its decline under Stalinism, and its subsequent resurgence: first, as a founding document of medical genetics, and most recently, as a manifesto for nationalists and racial purists.

Krementsov’s meticulously researched ‘biography of a book’ sheds light not only on the peculiar fate of eugenics in Russia, but also on its convoluted transnational history, elucidating the field’s protean nature and its continuing and contested appeal to diverse audiences, multiple local trajectories, and global trends. It is required reading for historians of eugenics, science, medicine, education, literature, and Russia, and it will also appeal to the general reader looking for a deeper understanding of this challenging subject.

La santé et la médecine au-delà des frontières

Beyond Borders: Health and Medicine in Historical Context

Call for papers

Date: 3-7 December 2019
Venue: Auckland New Zealand

This conference is located in Auckland New Zealand. Whilst New Zealand is far removed geographically from the epicentre of many significant past medical developments, we believe it is important to view the history of health and medicine in a broad international perspective, with ideas and systems taking on different forms in different contexts. It is this intersection between the local and international which will form a major theme of our conference.
This biennial conference is not exclusive in terms of its themes, and aims to reflect the diversity of the discipline of the history of health and medicine. We welcome papers from all areas of that history, including health systems, public health, indigenous health, mental health, biography, hospital history and nursing history. We also welcome papers/panels relating to medical museums/exhibitions.
Submissions from scholars across the range of career stages are welcome, especially those from postgraduate and early career researchers. We offer competitive travel grants to postgraduate students to attend the conference.

Call for Papers opens: January 2019

Please see our conference website for further details: http://anzshm2019.org/.
