In 1705-1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession and two years after a devastating earthquake, an 'epidemic' of mysterious sudden deaths terrorized Rome. In early modern society, a sudden death was perceived as a mala mors because it threatened the victim's salvation by hindering repentance and last confession. Special masses were celebrated to implore God's clemency and Pope Clement XI ordered his personal physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi, to perform a series of dissections in the university anatomical theatre in order to discover the 'true causes' of the deadly events. It was the first investigation of this kind ever to take place for a condition which was not contagious. The book that Lancisi published on this topic, De subitaneis mortibus ('On Sudden Deaths', 1707), is one of the earliest modern scientific investigations of death; it was not only an accomplished example of mechanical philosophy as applied to the life sciences in eighteenth-century Europe, but also heralded a new pathological anatomy (traditionally associated with Giambattista Morgagni). Moreover, Lancisi's tract and the whole affair of the sudden deaths in Rome marked a significant break in the traditional attitude towards dying, introducing a more active approach that would later develop into the practice of resuscitation medicine. Sudden Death explores how a new scientific interpretation of death and a new attitude towards dying first came into being, breaking free from the Hippocratic tradition, which regarded death as the obvious limit of physician's capacity, and leading the way to a belief in the 'conquest of death' by medicine which remains in force to this day.

The organising committee invites anyone – whether a member of the Society or not – to attend and participate. It promises to provide a resoundingly interesting programme. It invites all who are involved in the history of medicine and related healthcare disciplines to submit abstracts of their work for consideration for acceptance for presentation.

Papers can be on any topic relevant to medical history but we are particularly interested in the overarching topic of Missions, Methods and Management. A limited amount of financial assistance is available for postgraduate students of history (Student Bursary application) and postgraduate students may enter their papers for the Ben Haneman Memorial Prize.

Conference on the History of Rural Medicine

April 6-7, 2015 

We are calling for papers for a day-and-half-conference on the history of rural medicine to be held at the University of Kansas Medical Center on April 6-7, 2015.

Please send an abstract for a 20 minute talk by January 30 to Chris Crenner in the Department of History and Philosophy of Medicine at ccrenner@kumc.edu. If you are unable to send by email please call Ryan Fagan at (913) 588-7040 for further instructions. We will notify all applicants of acceptance by February 6.

We would like to encourage submissions by early scholars and graduate students. The Department of Family Medicine at KUMC has made available funding to help defray the costs of travel. If you are an early scholar or graduate student and wish to be considered for travel support, please include a letter of intent addressed to Dr. Mike Kennedy, Dept. of Family Medicine, University of Kansas Medical Center and outline very briefly the significance of your project to rural medicine.

The conference will host a series of short papers with discussion as part of a collaborative effort to understand trends and implications in historical research on rural medicine and health. The conference will conclude on April 7 with a roundtable discussion of the past and future of rural medicine to be held at the headquarters of the American Academy of Family Physicians in Leawood, Kansas and hosted by the Center for the History of Family Medicine of the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, and chaired by Dr. Robert Daugherty, former dean of the University of Nevada School of Medicine and past Vice President of Health Sciences and Dean of the College of Medicine at the University of South Florida.

The keynote address will be given by Jennifer Gunn, History of Medicine Endowed Professor and Director, Institute for Advanced Study, University of Minnesota, speaking on the development of educational programs in rural medicine.

The conference is a collaborative project of the Program in History of Medicine, University of Minnesota, the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, and the Departments of Family Medicine and History and Philosophy of Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
