Medical Complaints and Grievances (1500-1750)
Call for Papers
10-11 JULY 2017
Funded Strand in the 2017 Reading Conference of Early Modern Studies
We invite 200 word abstracts for 20 minute papers, with name and affiliation, to: emrc@reading.ac.uk. Funding is available to help with costs of a limited number of PhD students and early career researchers; if you would like to apply for this assistance, please include a statement about why it would be helpful. Our approach to ‘grievance’ / ‘complaint’ is broad: it can refer both to people’s reactions to suffering/illness, and to the suffering/illness itself.
Ideas for topics (others welcome too!) :
• Experiencing or witnessing suffering and pain
• Complaints about pain, medical practitioners, nurses, or patients
• Learning to live with disease or disability
• Painful or pain‐relieving medical/surgical treatments
• Sensory aspects of medicine/surgery – smells, tastes, sounds, sights, & tactile sensations
Keynote speaker:
Jan Frans van Dijkhuizen, University of Leiden
