We are excited to announce the Libori Summer School 2026, dedicated to the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists. The Summer School offers an interdisciplinary forum for critical inquiry into women’s intellectual contributions across historical periods, cultural contexts, and disciplinary boundaries.

The Libori Summer School invites applications from Bachelor’s, Master’s and graduate students, as well as post-doctoral researchers interested in exploring the rich, diverse, and often overlooked histories of women philosophers and scientists. We particularly welcome contributions that adopt innovative perspectives, engage with neglected figures or traditions, or challenge established narratives through interdisciplinary approaches.

Possible areas of interest include (but are by no means limited to): 

  • History of philosophy and science
  • Economics and political thought
  • Ecofeminism and environmental humanities
  • History of medicine and health
  • Theology, religious thought, and spiritual traditions
  • Global and non-Western intellectual histories
  • Women writers, literary culture, and philosophy

  • Intersections of philosophy, science, art, and culture



The Libori Summer School strongly encourages interdisciplinary dialogue, welcoming submissions that bridge philosophy, history, science studies, literature, theology, economics, environmental studies, and related fields. Comparative, cross-cultural, and transhistorical approaches are especially encouraged.

It is recommended that submissions are made at the earliest opportunity, as this will facilitate the reservation of hotel accommodation at the earliest opportunity.

Inspired by the writings of the ancients, Renaissance scholarship placed great emphasis on anatomy. Together with botany and clinical medicine, it became a major driving force behind the growing appreciation of empirical approaches beyond the mere reception of the classics. Anatomists were proud of their new discoveries and began to argue over priorities. Medical students flocked to places such as Ferrara and Padua for the often hands-on teaching of the leading anatomists of the day. Students also became more aware of the fundamental anatomical differences between men and women, leading them to abandon the "one sex model" in favour of emphasising the different anatomical make-up of women and the need for different treatments.

Animal dissection took on a new significance, going beyond substitution in the absence of a sufficient supply of human cadavers for teaching purposes. More importantly, post-mortems, the dissection of the deceased, became increasingly common in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were now seen as a window into the pathological processes and changes inside the diseased body. In the world of learned medicine, surgery was closely linked to anatomy. Both disciplines were often taught by the same professor, who might even demonstrate surgical procedures to his students on cadavers. In everyday medical practice, however, most doctors, especially outside Italy, considered surgery to be a less dignified, manual task, which they usually refrained from performing and delegated to the numerous artisanal barber-surgeons.

While historians of surgery have often focused on the development of major operations and sophisticated instruments, recent research has shown that ordinary surgical practice was much more mundane, focusing on minor injuries, fractures and illnesses, and rarely on amputations. Most surgical cases required conservative treatment with ointments, oils, plasters, etc.. Military surgeons, on the other hand, were much more in demand on the battlefield, to the point where amputations even gave rise to a culture of prosthetics. Finally, the larger, more invasive operations, such as the removal of bladder stones, the repair of hernias and harelips, and the removal of cataracts, remained largely the domain of a small group of mostly itinerant 'operateurs' who advertised their services on 'theatres' in marketplaces.


Organisation

The Summer School will provide an overview of the state of the art in the field, the major historiographical debates, and promising perspectives and sources for future research. It is aimed primarily at students and early-career researchers, but participants at later stages of their careers and with diverse backgrounds and interests are also welcome. Over three full days, the programme will feature a combination of keynote lectures and practical workshops. The latter will explore a variety of written and visual sources as well as material objects.

Please, note that the number of participants in Pisa will be limited to a max. 20, but the Summer School is hybrid and we invite those who cannot come to Pisa to participate online.

L’actualité épidémiologique et les défis posés à la santé publique nous incitent aujourd’hui à réexaminer une autre épidémie : celle du sida. En 1981, une forme particulière de pneumonie était diagnostiquée, d’abord aux États-Unis, puis en Europe, principalement chez les hommes homosexuels, bientôt appelée GRID (Gay-Related Immune Deficiency) puis renommés « sida » ou « syndrome d’immunodéficience acquise » dès 1982, suscitant une forme de « panique sexuelle » de la part des autorités médicales et politiques.

Dans ce contexte d’urgence médicale et sociale, le milieu associatif et militant, l’art, l’activisme – tant médical que politique – ont constitué des pôles de résistance à des pratiques d’exclusion des minorités sexuelles. La maladie du sida se caractérise ainsi par un paradoxe. Certes, les discours médiatique et scientifique des années 1980-90 ont fortement marqué les sociétés occidentales, notamment allemande et française. Néanmoins, il ne semble pas y avoir eu de transmission de cette mémoire du sida, et peu de réflexions interdisciplinaires au croisement des sciences humaines, des sciences naturelles et de la médecine y ont été consacrées. S’il existe aujourd’hui une certaine expertise et recherche sur le sida, elle se fait le plus souvent dans un cadre national.

Or la perspective croisée franco-allemande, fondée sur la comparaison métropolitaine entre Paris et Berlin (Ouest et Est), nous plonge au cœur de la question. Si les situations sociétales étaient a priori comparables (système de santé public performant, structures sociales, circulations transatlantiques), on note des différences notables entre les deux pays. Ainsi en France, il faut attendre la fin de la décennie pour que les pouvoirs publics mettent en place les premières politiques de santé publique, là où en RFA, elles le sont dès les débuts de l’épidémie en associant directement les premières organisations de lutte contre la maladie. Par ailleurs, la situation fut spécifique à Berlin, où deux régimes de gestion de la maladie se faisaient face.

Notre atelier topographique sera donc l’occasion d’interroger la place du sida dans l’histoire du temps présent. Comment se fit la gestion des malades ? Quels protocoles d’urgence furent mis en place, tant par les pouvoirs publics que par le milieu associatif ? Quelle en fut la visibilité dans l’espace public ? Comment le monde artistique (arts, théâtre, cinéma, littérature) réagit-il ? Comment se déploie la mémoire sociohistorique de l’épidémie ? Et comment élargir la mémoire au-delà de la visibilité des hommes gays (aux personnes toxicomanes, aux travailleur*es du sexe, aux partenaires hétérosexuel*les) ?

L’atelier topographique se déploiera autour d’un programme scientifique et culturel situé et ambitieux : il s’agira de mettre en dialogue interdisciplinaire des jeunes chercheur*es (en médecine, biologie, histoire, sociologie, sciences politiques, muséologie, études cinématographiques, entre autres), des chercheur*es confirmé*es et d’autres spécialistes de la question (pédagogues, muséographes, travailleur*ses sociaux*les, militant*es). De plus, le choix des lieux visités (musées, institutions, archives, lieux de mémoire, associations) permettront d’établir des liens entre histoire, recherche et société et de fournir des terrains pour un travail collectif au cours de l’atelier topographique.

Déroulement de l’atelier :

L’atelier d’une semaine est conçu pour un public masterant et (post-)doctorant, intéressé par ces questions et issu des sciences humaines et sociales ou des sciences dures, afin d’encourager un dialogue interdisciplinaire. Il sera un lieu de pratique de l’histoire in situ valorisant l’initiative participante et de dialogue entre spécialistes et chercheurs. Une brochure de textes (reader) distribuée au préalable constituera la base théorique et méthodologique commune destinée à fournir un bagage pour les visites topographiques et nourrir les débats. Le programme se veut interactif, alternant visites et analyses des lieux historiques, discussions et travail de groupe en autonomie.

Écrire l'histoire de la COVID-19

Writing the History of Covid-19: Lessons for the Next Pandemic

While the Covid-19 crisis is still unfolding, it has already revealed much about the history of our time and left lessons that will be important to study before the next pandemic. But even before it began, archivists and scholars were struggling to develop new methods to record and analyze history in an age of abundant but perishable data. Resource constraints and fights over access have only intensified because of pressures on archival budgets and the partisan politics that surround any attempt at retrospective analysis. How do we gain a sense of perspective, and preserve information that might otherwise be lost?

Thanks to support from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, Columbia's History Lab and MuckRock have assembled a database that already includes almost two hundred thousand pages of records related to the government response to Covid-19 obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests. We are also developing state-of-the art tools for doing digital history, both to analyze large corpora and determine what might be missing.

This summer, History Lab will assemble a multidisciplinary team to take stock of archival efforts to date, conduct exploratory research, and help identify priorities for long-term preservation. We will begin with a two-week workshop (June 5-16) in which participants will meet with historians, journalists, archivists, and public health experts. Over the following months, we will conduct interviews and gather documents, and finally reconvene to report findings Aug.31-Sept. 1. This program will be led by Professors Matthew Connelly, Wilmot James, and Stephen Morse.

Eligibility: We encourage applications from graduate students who already have significant research experience and are interested in participating in collaborative work during the summer months, with the goal of producing jointly authored publications.

Financial Support: We can offer a summer stipend of $6,000 to help cover the cost of travel and accommodations during in-person meetings. There is additional funding for research expenses.

General Description
The Tracing Never‐ending Diseases: New Trends in Medical, Material, and Audiovisual History Summer
School aims to probe the history of public health methodologies and materialities in education and
medical research to trace, test, inventory, and treat infectious diseases between the end of the 19th
century up until the present day, in which we focus on the body and micro‐organisms with questions such as (but not limited to),


a) What objects and artefacts did doctors and researchers mobilize at different moments in time to give a visible and tangible reality to diseases whose clinical presentation was complex, multifaceted, and
sometimes partially unexplained?
Through what screening, classification, and collection processes did a set of symptoms and
epidemiological observations take on clinical or epidemiological meaning?


b) What relevant methods and approaches allow historians to create meaning from vestiges of diseases of the past? What scientific problems (i.e., ethical, legal, scientific) does the reuse of previous medical
samples raise today?


We will be studying cases of landmark diseases that—as is the case of syphilis or tuberculosis—are
resistant to prevention campaigns or that—as is the case of HIV/AIDs—thwart international eradication
programs. In order to present the newest and most useful historiographic approaches in the field, we will bring material culture, audiovisual studies, and the history of medicine into conversation. We will
construct our reflection using the history of objects as a foundation, such as public health films, medical
tests, anatomical castings, photographic collections, public health propaganda posters, and biological
archives.


The Summer School will be a 5‐day working conference structured around intensive discussion and handson research activities. It will bring together experts from academia, the cultural heritage sector, and medicine, to mine the rich vein of overlapping studies between the History of Science, Medicine and Technology, Material Culture Studies, and Audiovisual History. It aims to educate a new generation of scholars in the History of Medicine, with a particular focus on materiality, the audiovisual, and
interdisciplinary dialogue.

The Summer School's schedule will alternate between seminar sessions and participants' presentations.
In each seminar, an invited expert will present their methodological approach in relation to a bibliography of resources; they will then propose small group exercises for participants. The goal is to reflect on the many innovative approaches developed throughout the history of medicine. Participant presentations will be the opportunity for participants to present, discuss and debate a case or hypothesis in dialogue with their personal research.
 

The week's activities will be further deepened by plenary sessions. A half‐day will be dedicated to a visit and presentation from Geneva's History of Science Museum. And another will be spent welcoming
Geneva's University Hospitals' clinicians within the framework of the infectious diseases continuing
education program.


Educational Value
Throughout the week, participants:
− will gain familiarity with approaches to material and audiovisual history as applied to medical and health issues encountered throughout the 20th century.
− will be introduced to approaches that combine cutting‐edge technology and historical construction such as archeogenetics.
− will develop reflections on the traces lefts by diseases of the past, as well as on previous medical
knowledge, thinking specifically of diseases that tended to spread invisibly—in order to escape
epidemiological vigilance? How do objects used in medical education—testing techniques, prophylactic
tools—provide visibility to these diseases or imbue them with clinical meaning?
− will receive personalized feedback on their research. They will have the opportunity to briefly present
some of their own research interests that tie in with the Summer School's themes and methodological
approaches. They will be asked to bring a few questions or research hypotheses to discuss with senior
research professors and the group as a whole.
− will be encouraged to highlight the relevance of a historical study in the contemporary scientific and
media landscape and to reflect on public health projects or on past medical developments as keys to
understanding the present. In this capacity, they will be called upon to discuss with clinicians during an
accredited half‐day of continuing education for the hospital's infectious disease specialists.
To participate in the Summer School
The School is open to 20 participants and will be held in English. It is designed for PhD and post‐doctoral students in Contemporary History, Medical and Scientific History, Medical Anthropology, Film Studies, Material Studies, as well as young researchers interested in interdisciplinary studies between SHS (social and human sciences) and medicine. Participants will be selected through an application process.
Interested candidates are invited to apply by 15 January 2023 by sending a CV and a motivation letter in
which you describe how you could contribute to the Summer School and what you hope to gain from
attending it. Applicants will be notified by 1 February 2023.
The Summer School benefits from financial support from the SNF and the Brocher Foundation. A
registration fee of CHF 550.‐ per participant is requested. This price includes both housing and meals.
Limited funding is available to cover or contribute to expenses in accordance to need. To apply for funding please send a list of estimated costs and an explanatory letter.


Practical Information
The Summer School will take place in the exceptional setting of the Brocher Foundation, on the banks of Lake Geneva, Switzerland. It is organized as part of the international research project Neverending

The theme
“Relations” in the life and medical sciences have a richly varied history, including genealogy and notions of kinship, heredity, systematics and phylogenetics, ecology and human-animal relations, and cultures and environments of disease, health care and healing. This summer school will chart the metaphorical traffic between these domains, and the manifold ways in which living relations have been visualized. Genus and species, the key concepts of ancient Greek metaphysics and logic, had genealogical connotations, and there is evidence of diagrammatic and even gestural representations of genealogy for other ancient cultures, such as the Lao and Ming China. Late medieval and early modern Europe was a hotbed of genealogical visualisations, with tables of consanguinity and affinity regulating incest prohibition and inheritance in law, trees of Jesse recounting Christ’s lineal descent, and family trees and genealogical tables being deployed to prove nobility or, within the Iberian empire, “purity of blood.”

Though such systems of social, religious and racial discrimination were firmly rooted in concepts of filiation, they did not immediately translate into relations among plant and animal species. For a long time, these were rather allocated fixed positions on a hierarchical “chain of being” that reflected timeless relations of perfection and privation, betrayed to this day by a language of “higher” and “lower” that connotes relations of dominance and servitude. Only in the decades around 1700 did naturalists first debate whether bifurcating diagrams, which by then were in routine use to classify living beings along a linear series of progressive differentiation, could reflect the “natural affinities” observable among plants and animals.

Paradoxically, in the long run, the eighteenth century seems to have concluded that it was neither the scale nor the tree, but rather the network that best described relationships among species within a complex but balanced economy of nature in which each organism, whether “low” or “high,” had a crucial role to play. It took a further century to separate “true” affinities or “homologies” from “analogies.” Homologies reflected a common history of evolutionary descent retrievable through painstaking morphological, palaeontological, embryological and cytological investigations. Analogies became the similarities, associations and often surprisingly intimate symbioses that emerge from the “striving,” as Charles Darwin called it, of “all organic beings … to seize on each place in the economy of nature.” 

As a consequence, and promoted above all by the German Darwinist Ernst Haeckel, the “tree of life” became the “canonical icon” (Stephen Jay Gould) for visualizing phylogeny. Evolutionary affinities, like parasitism and commensality, now reflected the temporary outcome of adaptations and shifting power relations throughout the history of life. Especially in racial anthropology, the construction of lineages and phylogenies based on linguistic, cultural and physical features, such as minute anatomical details of the skull, made it possible to emphasize either closeness in terms of a shared evolutionary history or separation in terms of linear, progressive evolution towards “higher” forms of humanity. That racist and anti-racist discourses have tended to play on this register of possibilities offered by tree diagrams explains to some extent its dominance in representations of human phylogeny.

The picture of an inexorable rise of “tree thinking” is complicated, however, by the fact that, in parallel, kinship itself became a subject of explicit analysis or “literalization” (Marilyn Strathern) in research initiatives that crossed between sciences and humanities. Francis Galton and Henry Lewis Morgan independently built on a long-standing juridical tradition to propose analytical schemes allowing for the exact investigation of pedigrees and kinship terminologies. Kinship became measurable in terms of distances spanning a network of relations connecting any individual with any other in a potentially infinite population. 

These innovations fed into major disciplinary strands of the study of natural and cultural inheritance in the twentieth century: research on “kinship systems” in anthropology, on the one hand, and eugenics, genetics and population genetics, on the other. Though pursued largely apart, in both areas the study of genetic relations held the promise to reveal deep structures underlying the evolution of organic and social systems. Phylogenetics in particular received major innovative impulses following the “modern synthesis,” which brought together population genetics with ecology, systematics and palaeontology. With the advent of the computer, numerical taxonomy, cladistics and molecular clocks placed the study of organismic affinities onto a quantitative, seemingly objective basis, which still informs the life and human sciences, including commercial technologies of ancestry testing.

The assumption that “blood is thicker than water” (David M. Schneider) may have motivated much of this research, as is evident in the study of human blood-group distributions and in the theory of “kin selection.” But genetically construed kinship follows a combinatorial rather than a dichotomous logic. Genetic kinship never strictly implies closeness because the combinatorial processes from which it arises can always surprisingly distant relations. In conjunction with new reproductive technologies, genetics has thus resulted in an upheaval of traditional notions that anthropologists and sociologists targeted in “new kinship studies” from the 1990s. 

Such upheavals were not in applications of reproductive technologies alone. Work on the so-called “tree of life” has brought to light surprising evolutionary affinities as well. Horizontal gene transfer through hybridization and other vectors like viruses is revealing an undergrowth of crosslinks between distantly related organisms. New understandings of symbiosis, especially of microbiomes within their macrobial hosts, are casting fresh light on inter-organismic dependencies. Echoing François Jacob’s (and ultimately Claude Lévi-Strauss’) notion of evolutionary “tinkering,” modern geneticists seem to imply that the tree of life was always really a net, because “nature was always a genetic engineer” (Stefan Helmreich). Current debates – within anthropology with its new materialism and more-than-human approach, and within the life sciences with their emphasis on transgenics and systemic interactions – could therefore highlight forms of relatedness beyond the tree. These are furthering ecosystem-oriented thinking along the lines of coalitions and shared environmental risks.

“The secret of aristocracy is zoology,” Karl Marx proclaimed in his Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right (1843), while Darwin, in his On the Origin of Species (1859), held that “all true classification is genealogical” and that “community of descent is the hidden bond which naturalists have been unconsciously seeking.” Such statements not only reference the long-standing practice of using kinship and descent to define and articulate social relations, often involving projections onto the natural world. They also point to the ideological functions of such biocultural concepts in the western tradition. Today, evolutionary theory and genomics together elucidate the multifarious “affinities” between living beings; that “we” – humans, animals, plants, and also “lower” organisms like fungi, bacilli and viruses – are all “related” and rely on our “entanglement” with others appears once again to be indisputable. Yet at the same time, technologies of associating diseases, behaviours and even political inclinations with genomic markers, or tracing one’s descent back to hypothetical ancestors in the Pleistocene, betray a continuing obsession with social, cultural and racial distinctions that feed into an overwhelming concern, at the present moment, with global identity politics of exclusion and inclusion.

The 2021 CSMBR summer school will explore theories, applications, problems, and contexts of human-based measurements across the late medieval and early modern period (c.1400-1700). It builds upon a series of four intertwined questions:

• How was it like experiencing the world before the advent of universally standardised measurement?

• What role did the human body, its limbs and the five senses play in defining spaces, distances, values, lists of objects, schemes and prices?

• How were systems of human-based measurement affected by the advent of early modern technology?

• To what extent can we replace human-based and value-laden measurement with technology-based parameters?

 

These questions will be addressed both in presentations and roundtables by focusing on three main themes, namely

1) the Body as a Canon and its Proportions
2) the Body as a Unit of Measurement: Place, Space, and Orientation
3) the Body as Unit of Value: Quality and Price

Under each headline speakers will be discussing how the three-dimensionality of the body and its limbs affected theories of proportion (Galen, Leonardo, Dürer, Vesalius, Palladio, etc.) as well as the shaping of architectural and urban spaces in normal and pathological conditions (e.g. homes, temples, hospices, pharmacies, hospitals and areas of confinement); the methods and orders of dissection and their impact on learned representations of the body (Berengario da Carpi, Bassiano Landi, Acquapendente). Particular attention will be devoted to the five senses and to the way the sense of taste defined values of quality/purity and thus prices of foodstuff on the market (drugs, spices, etc.), how the mapping of colours and shades helped classifying substances (uroscopy, classification of mixtures); how the anatomy of the eye was related to the definition of “visual space” in the perception of external objects, the development of acoustics and harmonics in relation to the anatomy of the ear as well as, more generally, how philosophical theories of natural space (locus) and spatial orientation developed side by side with an analysis of sense-perception. Special emphasis shall also be laid on how units of measure in terms of inches, palms, fathoms, and feet were relevant in the making of maps, astronomical observations and diagrams of latitude as well as on the relation between heartbeat and time, in medicine as well as in music.

While strongly rooted in the intellectual history tradition, the summer school will present and discuss a variety of verbal and non-verbal sources (e.g. manuscripts, images, music pieces, and artefacts) in a multidisciplinary approach that aims at attracting and welcoming scholars with different backgrounds, interests and expertise.

The summer school spans across four days, articulated as 3+1, namely three days of lectures plus a final day entirely dedicated to roundtables and to the discussion of presentations from attendees (see below). To these, two workshops are added: the former (late morning) shall focus on reading and interpreting manuscript sources relevant to the visualisation of the body (Stolberg), the latter (late afternoon) will be devoted to hands-on experimentation with replicas of early modern instruments (esp. Santorio’s pulsilogium).

To engage fully with the speakers during this four-day experience, attendees are strongly invited to elaborate their own contributions on the topics discussed, either in the form of PowerPoint presentations and/or as short papers (max. 5 min). These will be followed by thematic roundtables focusing on the analysis of non-verbal sources, including relevant artefacts, images, videos, and music tracks.

Roundtables topics can also be proposed by the attendees upon reaching an agreement amongst not less than 3 people interested. For organisational reasons, only two such round tables can be proposed and must be communicated to the panel at least 3 weeks prior to the official beginning of the Summer School.

The theme
‘To examine the causes of life, we must first have recourse to death.’ Thus Viktor Frankenstein became ‘capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter’. Mary Shelley wrote at a time of great conceptual and practical transformation in the relations of life and death. The issues she raised still resonate in biology and medicine today, and our age of ‘brain death’ and ‘programmed cell death’ has tabled its own urgent questions. For if life and death have been opposites, and even this may be questioned, they have been opposed in very various ways. This summer school will explore that variety, seeking patterns across time and cultures, fields of study and levels of analysis. It aims to reassess received views of continuity and discontinuity in the entanglements of life and death between the middle ages and the present day.

The medieval synthesis of Aristotelian philosophy and Christian theology posed anew the problem of life and death, reviving debate over bodily mortality, the immortality of the soul and the practicalities of resurrection. Since classical antiquity, life had consisted in the possession of a plurality of capacities—the Thomist soul was as complex as Aristotle’s—and death in their removal: there were many lives, but one negation, a view compatible with the Christian belief that the immortal soul left the body in an instant. Yet death, with disease, was also a defining characteristic of living beings: only they can fall ill and eventually die. By the Renaissance, modernizing critics of Aristotelian natural philosophy, led by Francis Bacon and René Descartes, sought proof of the superiority of their views in reforms of Galenic medicine that, they promised, would realize the ancient dream of the prolongation of human life. In early modern medicine, death provided physicians with opportunities for numerous autopsies that in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries began to raise urgent and difficult questions about the seats and causes of disease. Had departures from the healthy state caused or just accompanied death; did they represent morbid processes or result from mere decay? Could anatomical changes ever reveal anything about the chemical causes of ageing or disease?

Intense engagement with the problem of life and death is often traced to the later eighteenth century. A rising tide of alarm at the prospect of being buried alive spawned scepticism about the standard definitions and signs of death; this led to such institutions as death certificates signed by physicians, dead-houses where cadavers could be stored to find out if they were really ready to rot, and the humane societies that sought to resuscitate those who perhaps only appeared to have died from drowning, asphyxiation or a lightning strike. Meanwhile, experimenting physicians added vital forces to mechanical philosophies as they turned death from the work of an instant into a process, a set of smaller deaths. They fostered the idea that the body dies from the outside in, with the possibility that the seemingly dead could still retain some spark of vitality in the heart, the first organ to pulse with life and the last to die. Vitalism suggested that ‘life’ extended beyond the individual lifespan, that life as such was immortal. Without a general conception of ‘life’, death had been a mere absence; it had no positive content. For the anatomist Xavier Bichat in Paris around 1800, death was still privation: ‘Life’, in his famous formula, ‘is the totality of functions which resist death.’ Yet on the larger scale of populations, George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon and Carl Linnaeus had already argued that death kept nature in balance and the total quantity of life the same. Extinction and its role in the earth’s history was much discussed. We shall explore how death acquired its own distinctive features as it gained a place within the very concepts of life.

Life and death thus became correlatives, with pathological anatomy more systematically capitalizing on the light shed by death (the moment of Frankenstein) and comparative anatomy making death central to life. Georges Cuvier’s ‘conditions of existence’ went beyond the environmental culling of existing species to let the environment determine in advance which species could possibly live. In medicine, life no longer simply resisted death from external insults; the milieu produced life, living organisms inevitably produced disease and disease produced death. Death was becoming part and parcel of life. According to the embryologist Karl Ernst von Baer in 1834: ‘Organic bodies … destroy themselves … in the moment of conception their death warrant is signed.’

Later-nineteenth-century physiology radicalized this view. Claude Bernard argued that, ‘when we wish to designate phenomena of life, we refer in reality to phenomena of death’. Life relied on consumption, destruction and disorganization; it was, in the words of chemist Eilhard Mitscherlich, ‘nothing but a putrefaction’. Conversely, the germ theorists had shown that putrefaction itself was no absence of life, but resulted from its proliferation in microscopical forms. Whereas death for Cuvier was an a priori threat, Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection made death the ever-active agent familiar from Thomas Robert Malthus’s principle of population. Actuaries priced life expectancy in insurance schemes, and demographers, now charting birth-rates and death-rates, darkly predicted the deaths of whole peoples. Nightmares of the disharmony of land, food and people were realized in murderous biopolitical experiments. The conceptual internalization of death within life also inspired therapeutic strategies from anaesthesia, which produced states of suspended animation, to antisepsis and chemotherapy, those techniques of selective cellular killing, but left no place for the soul.

Yet twentieth-century medical science lost its tolerance of death as an inevitable hazard of life; death became not a mere privation, but a threat to life, to be fought off just like any disease. The dream of prolonging life increasingly guided clinical practice and public health; science promised to conquer death. Leading life scientists, notably Elie Metchnikoff of the Pasteur Institute, coiner of ‘gerontology’, wondered if there was such a thing as ‘natural death’ or any preordained limit to the human lifespan. The more pessimistic zoologist August Weismann argued that death had evolved in multicellular organisms because once the work of reproduction (including parental care) was done, and the immortality of the germline assured, ‘the unlimited existence of individuals would be a luxury without any corresponding advantage’. Death was an evolutionary adaptation. In an engineering perspective, however, proper maintenance of the body-machine could, in principle, postpone death almost indefinitely, provided the environment was right and genetic deficiencies were corrected. As life relied increasingly on technological support, definitions of death, notably ‘brain death’, introduced with heart transplants in the late 1960s, came to depend on the current state of medical technology. People feared not burial alive but, on the one hand, being kept alive artificially, and on the other, premature organ donation.

Modern biomedicine researched ageing and death at the levels not just of population and individual, but also of cells and molecules. The surgeon Alexis Carrel’s early twentieth-century claims of cellular immortality—for cultures of embryonic chick heart that appeared set to divide for ever—were challenged in the 1950s by the view that normal cells could divide only a certain number of times before coming up against the ‘Hayflick limit’, today interpreted as a consequence of telomere shortening. Cell lines, most famously and notoriously the HeLa cells derived from an African-American cancer patient, owed their immortality to pathological transformation. Refrigeration technologies slowed or even halted life’s processes in sperm and embryos, microbes and seeds, allowing their distribution across space and time. Programmed cell death (apoptosis) has become a major area of investigation, as the process that shapes bodies, for example, by sculpting digits in vertebrate embryos, and is inhibited in diseases, notably cancers in which cells accumulate more through decreased death than increased proliferation. In cellular terms, our bodies are today framed as scenes of carnage—billions of cells die every day—and as teeming with life through hosting trillions of microbes (the ‘microbiome’) that, from the skin to the gut, help keep us alive.

The theme of ‘life and death’ thus lets us range across the biological and biomedical sciences. Certain topics, such as projects of rejuvenation and definitions of death, have acted as magnets for historians and popular writers; we shall stand back and take a broader view of the historical patterns while highlighting a set of analytical questions that are personal and political too. How and to what extent have medicine and biology framed life and death as opposed? What have studies of death really contributed to understandings of life? What defines an individual lifespan, its beginning and end? Does history question the dominant medical approaches, not to mention the transhumanist call for a ‘war on death’? Has death, beyond all its negativity, been productive of life?

The Audiovisuals and internet archives: Histories of healthy bodies in the 21st century spring school invites young researchers to engage in four days of intensive discussion and hands-on activities on the relation between the history of the healthy body, body politics, and the Internet at the turn of the twenty-first century (roughly 1990s-2010). The spring school will take a transnational perspective and focus on developments in Germany, France and Great Britain. 
The spring school is organized as part of the research project “The Healthy Self as Body Capital: Individuals, Market-Based Societies, and BodyPolitics in Visual Twentieth Century Europe (BodyCapital)” funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and led by Christian Bonah (University of Strasbourg) and Anja Laukötter (Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin). 
In building the historical foundation of the Internet era in the BodyCapital perspective, we will encounter new modes of representations and practices of the body that the Internet favored: webcam uses, first artist creations, reuse of traditional contents (photographs and films), amongst others.

The spring school includes talks and workshops with experts, a field trips, and film viewings. Further, the spring school will benefit from collaboration with the French Institut National de l’Audiovisuel (INA). Confirmed speakers include Niels Brügger and Valérie Schafer. Participants will also be invited to present on their own research projects. 

The spring school will be held at the Université de Strasbourg, Strasbourg, France. It will be held in English. Participants may apply for funding to cover travel and accommodation expenses.

En vue de former de jeunes chercheurs et chercheuses - doctorat et post-doctorat – dans une perspective interdisciplinaire aux questions de la naturalisation au cœur de l’actualité de la recherche en sciences sociales de la santé, l’EHESS, le Cermes3 et l’IRIS organisent dans le cadre du Programme de recherches interdisciplinaires « Santé » une école thématique dans la région parisienne (Domaine de Bierville) du 29 octobre au 2 novembre 2018. Date-limite de candidature : 15 septembre 2018.

L’une des questions parmi les plus discutées au sein des sciences sociales, aujourd’hui, à travers le monde, concerne l’essor de conceptions naturalistes du social. De fait, au cours des quinze dernières années, un nombre croissant d’intervenants (scientifiques, journalistes, acteurs politiques, experts es politiques publiques, etc.) sont venus affirmer, ou réaffirmer, l’existence de déterminismes biologiques censés régir une gamme de plus en plus étendue de pratiques et d’identités sociales : de l’appartenance à un groupe racial ou ethnique aux préférences sexuelles, en passant par la prédisposition à telle ou telle maladie ou la capacité à apprendre. L’inquiétude vis-à-vis de ces développements multiformes qui contribuent, chacun à sa manière (incidente ou au contraire radicale), à questionner la légitimité scientifique des sciences sociales laisse parfois percer une forme d’incrédulité concernant les évolutions en cours, assimilées à une régression sans précédent. Tout se passe comme si le sens de l’histoire s’était brutalement inversé avec le « retour » d’entités réputées disparues, ou en tout cas résiduelles : la race, l’hérédité de l’intelligence, etc. Pourtant, par un étrange paradoxe, cette même configuration a aussi vu la multiplication d’appels de chercheurs en sciences sociales à prendre appui sur le succès de l’épigénétique pour, à la fois repenser l’imbrication du social et du biologique, élargir le domaine de pertinence de nos disciplines et collaborer, sous des formes nouvelles, avec généticiens, épidémiologistes, médecins et autres spécialistes du biologique.

Saisir les singularités de cette nouvelle configuration des relations entre sciences de la vie et sciences sociales implique de remettre en perspective - historique, sociale, politique, épistémique - les entreprises contemporaines de naturalisation du social, d’en analyser les multiples dimensions et d’identifier avec précision les enjeux qu’elles recouvrent. Tel est l’objectif de cette école thématique pluridisciplinaire qui s’intéressera tout particulièrement à quatre dimensions.

- Un premier aspect indispensable à prendre en compte concerne la diversité des modalités par lesquelles s’opère la naturalisation du social. Ainsi, le déterminisme héréditaire des généticiens diffère-t-il notablement de la détermination neuronale problématisée au sein des neurosciences et des sciences cognitives, sans même parler des schèmes de pensée sur lesquels reposent les algorithmes censés révéler les liens sous-jacents entre les caractéristiques biologiques (anthropométriques et autres) des individus et leurs pratiques sociales (leurs préférences sexuelles in primis).

- Cette pluralité de styles de pensée scientifiques découle, en partie au moins, de la grande variété de disciplines, segments professionnels et configurations institutionnelles impliqués dans les différentes entreprises de naturalisation du social. A ce titre, il faut souligner le rôle central que joue la biomédecine, dans toutes ses dimensions, depuis une quinzaine d’années : les préoccupations liées à l’amélioration de la santé humaine sont très souvent le moteur d’innovations scientifiques et techniques mobilisées ensuite dans de tout autres domaines (la génomique constitue ici un cas d’espèce). La dimension économique n’est évidemment pas absente de ces processus, comme le montre l’expansion du marché des tests génétiques et/ou d’ADN (qu’il s’agisse d’évaluer le risque de maladie ou d’éclairer l’ascendance biogéographique de la personne testée), des applications spécialisés (avec leurs sites dédiés) et des objets connectés. Cette modalité consumériste du naturalisme biologique mérite d’être analysée à la lumière des analyses foucaldiennes sur la subjectivation individuelle et le règlement des conduites ainsi que des nombreuses théories sociologiques relatives aux processus d’individuation et d’autocontrôle.

- Un troisième questionnement concerne « l’objet » même des tentatives de naturalisation, leur « cible » si l’on préfère. Dans un certain nombre de cas, ce qui est en jeu c’est la caractérisation de populations humaines, au sens le plus général du terme : il suffit ici de penser aux débats en cours sur la légitimité du recours à la notion de race en génétique, à l’essor des admixture studies. De leur côté, les différences de genre ont été érigées en objet de recherche privilégié par une partie au moins des neurosciences et des sciences cognitives. Parallèlement, la liste de « comportements » prétendument déterminés par nos gènes ou notre configuration neuronale s’allonge pratiquement de jour en jour : de l’intelligence aux préférences sexuelles, en passant par la propension à la violence ou à l’usage des médias sociaux. Dans le contexte de la « médecine personnalisée », enfin, c’est de prédisposition génétique à telle ou telle pathologie qu’il est question avec à la clé, de façon plus ou moins spéculative, l’innovation technologique et biomédicale.

- Enfin, parce qu’il s’agit non seulement de connaître mais aussi d’intervenir et d’améliorer, il importe d’interroger les relations entre naturalisation, problématisation et politique. Ainsi la question de la naturalité des comportements est-il indissociable de la généralisation du risque, à la fois comme catégorie d’appréhension des problèmes et outil d’évaluation, mais également en tant que dispositif d’action privilégié par nombre de politiques publiques en matière de santé, d’éducation, ou d’environnement.

Chacun de ces aspects nécessite d’être replacé dans sa perspective historique propre, en ne s’arrêtant pas uniquement à la généalogie des notions mobilisées, mais en s’intéressant également à leurs usages sociaux et, parfois, proprement politiques. Pour ne prendre qu’un exemple, analyser les usages de la catégorie de race au sein des sciences biomédicales et de la biologie humaine contemporaine implique notamment de les comparer aux usages de cette notion par les anthropologues positivistes, les généticiens nazis, puis par les sociobiologistes contre lesquels bataillèrent les plus grands noms de l’antiracisme scientifique (Julian Huxley, Richard Lewontin, Steven Jay Gould, Albert Jacquard, etc.).

L’école thématique pluridisciplinaire qui se tiendra dans la région parisienne (lieu encore à déterminer), du 29 octobre au 2 novembre 2018 sera l’occasion d’approfondir les réflexions en cours sur ces différentes dimensions. Elle s’attachera en particulier à croiser des perspectives généralement envisagées de manière indépendante, comme celles qui concernent la naturalisation des origines humaines, des différences de genre, ou des comportements. L’attention portée aux thématiques nouvelles ou émergentes se combinera avec un souci de formation des jeunes chercheurs (doctorants et post-doctorants) et d’intensification des échanges entre les collègues français et étrangers.

D’une durée de quatre jours, l’école thématique associera trois formats de discussion :

1 Des conférences thématiques, lesquelles privilégieront des collègues étrangers que nous avons rarement l’occasion d’entendre et auront pour mandat d’offrir une synthèse/discussion critique des recherches en cours, de leurs perspectives et enjeux méthodologiques. Les conférenciers ayant accepté notre invitation sont : Duana Fullwiley (Stanford University), Hannah Landecker (UCLA), Rebecca Lemov (Harvard University), Ricardo Ventura Santos (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro), Sarah Richardson (Harvard University).

2 Des ateliers de lecture et de discussion critique d’une sélection de textes fondamentaux à destination des doctorants participants à l’école ; ceux-ci seront organisés et animés en priorité par les post doctorants ou jeunes chercheurs.

3 Des présentations de recherches en cours émanant aussi bien des chercheurs des centres et laboratoires de l’EHESS que de doctorants et post-doctorants.

Les jeunes chercheurs et chercheuses sélectionnés par le comité d’organisation participeront à des ateliers de lecture et de discussion critique de travaux fondamentaux et présenteront leurs recherches en cours. Chaque intervenant-e disposera de 15 minutes pour résumer les principaux points du texte de sa contribution écrite, qui devra être mise à disposition le 15 octobre 2018 au plus tard. Les travaux se tiendront en français et en anglais.

We invite applications from graduate students and early-career researchers in the history and social studies of science and biomedicine, and related fields, for a five-day summer (southern-hemisphere) winter school focusing on scholarship in the history of psychiatry. This is an excellent opportunity for young scholars interested in some of the more exciting recent developments in the history, sociology, and anthropology of medicine, in particular those scholars seeking to integrate various approaches in the interdisciplinary analysis of psychiatry and its history.

The history of psychiatry has attracted sustained attention by historians of medicine over the past several decades. The attention to psychiatry was partly caused by broader public debates about the role of psychiatry in modern societies. During the 1970s, for example, critics such as Thomas Szasz condemned psychiatry as a pseudo-branch of medicine and as a tool of modern societies to force individuals to conform to arbitrary social standards or to forcibly confine them to mental hospitals which Erving Gofman characterised as total institutions akin to prisons and concentration camps. The historical/philosophical work of Michel Foucault contributed to these characterisations as well. These views greatly contributed to historical research on the history of psychiatry.

How relevant are the approaches to the history of psychiatry inspired by these critical views today? After deinstitutionalisation, there are hardly any mental hospitals left, the influence of psychoanalysis has greatly declined, and psychiatrists appear to focus more on psychopharmacology than on psychotherapy. During this winter school, we will evaluate past and current research on the history of psychiatry, discuss promising new trends, and focus on topics that we expect will be relevant in the near future. Topics that will be discussed include: Modern Research on Insane Asylums and Mental Hospitals; Colonial and Post-Colonial Psychiatry; Diagnosing Populations: Psychiatric Epidemiology; Deinstitutionalisation and community psychiatry; Trauma: Experience, Explanations, and Treatments.

We are looking forward to discussing these issues and many others, according to the interests of participants. Through a mix of seminars, small group discussions, and case studies, graduate students and early-career researchers will become acquainted with the most interesting research in the history of psychiatry. The workshop faculty will illustrate their arguments with examples of their own recent and forthcoming research. We expect participants to shape these discussions and to contribute ideas and examples from their own studies. Additionally, there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy Sydney’s harbor, beaches, food, and cultural activities.

The winter course will be taught by Mark Micale (University of Illinois), Hans Pols (University of Sydney), and several other local academics with interest in this area.

We have planned this winter school before the conference of the Society for the Social Study of Science (4S), which will take place from 29 August to 1 September. There will be many interesting smaller events in the week preceding that conference.

The Summer School will explore how representations of the body and its functions changed from antiquity to the early modern period and how technology altered the perception of what we are as human animals. By adopting three of the most iconic analogies ever used in the history of medicine, The Kiln, the Alembic, and the Clockwork will explore the early modern imagery of the body, in connection to the methods of investigation and its overlapping with disciplines such as alchemy and astronomy. Particular attention will be devoted to processes such as the 'combination and the concoction of humours' (the Kiln), 'distillation, spirits refinement and perspiration' (the Alembic), and the 'mechanical action of innate heat' (the Clockwork) whilst considering, for each analogy, the visual impact it exerted on the Renaissance and early modern representations of human physiology.

The summer school is directed to undergraduates, postgraduates as well as PhD students wishing to deepen their knowledge of the history of medicine and its connection to other disciplines of knowledge in the early modern period. Sources and papers will be pre-circulated in order for attendees to engage fruitfully in conversation with speakers and in a roundtable at the end of each day.

Le XXe siècle est le siècle au cours duquel, pour la première fois, presque tous les champs de la politique et de la société ont été pénétrés et transformés par les médias de masse modernes. Ces relations se manifestent en particulier dans les changements que les films et la télévision ont suscités dans les domaines de la médecine, de la politique sanitaire et de l’éducation. Elle commence dès les premiers films médicaux d’enseignement qui ont mis de nouvelles images des maladies et des traitements à la disposition d’un public spécialisé, elle passe par les Kulturfilme des années 1920 qui ont répandu une conception moderne du corps dans l’enceinte des cinémas et par les films éducatifs commandés par les pouvoirs publics pour être utilisés en classe, et elle s’étend aux spots de prévention du SIDA et aux talk shows télévisés sur la santé. Les médias de masse audiovisuels reflètent et façonnent en permanence les changements de représentations, de perceptions et de pratiques liées au corps et à la santé, ces changements étant fréquemment sous-tendus par des considérations économiques. De ce point de vue, une histoire du corps, de sa perception et des émotions au XXe siècle est toujours aussi une histoire des médias de masse.

L’école de printemps « Histoire audiovisuelle au XXe siècle : Corps, pratiques et émotions » est une invitation à examiner de manière approfondie et sur une durée de cinq jours, la relation qui existe entre l’histoire du corps et sa politique d’une part, et le film et la télévision au XXe siècle d’autre part. C’est une perspective transnationale qui a été choisie ; elle prendra en compte l’Allemagne, la France et la Grande-Bretagne.

Cette école de printemps s’inscrit dans le projet de recherche « Le soi sanitaire comme capital corporel : individus, sociétés de marché et politique du corps dans l’Europe audiovisuelle du XXe siècle ». Elle est financée par le Conseil Européen de la Recherche (European Research Council, ERC) et dirigée par Christian Bonah (Université de Strasbourg) et Anja Laukötter (Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung de Berlin).

En comparant la situation de trois pays (Allemagne, France et Grande-Bretagne), les chercheur.e.s de Strasbourg et Berlin étudient les processus transformatifs suscités par des facteurs économiques qui ont amené le passage du concept de soins de santé globaux au sein d’un « état providence » à des idées plus récentes de capital humain et de corps sain en tant que capital individuel. Les sources de ce travail sont les médias de masse audiovisuels : films non-fictionnels historiques, émissions de télévision et vidéos diffusées sur Internet. Afin de fournir un contrepoint à la logique des médias de masse et leur opposer une logique potentiellement différente, les films amateurs et à usage privé sont également intégrés dans ces études.

Le projet s’appuie, en partie, sur les théories de Michel Foucault et sa critique de l’état moderne. En partant de l’hypothèse qu’à l’ère du néolibéralisme, la compréhension du corps est, elle aussi, façonnée par des théories néolibérales, le projet a pour but de placer les évolutions qui en découlent dans une perspective historique. Comment peut-on caractériser cette évolution vers une idéologie du « soi sanitaire » et la situer d’un point de vue historique ? Quels sont les contextes sociétaux, politiques et économiques qui ont contribué à ces développements et les ont suscités ?

Le projet se déploie sur quatre axes thématiques :
- l’histoire des aliments et de la nutrition ;
- l’histoire du mouvement et du sport ;
- l’histoire de la sexualité et de la reproduction ;
- l’histoire de la dépendance, de la toxicomanie et de l’usage abusif de substances diverses (médicaments, drogue, alcool).

L’un des objectifs de l’école de printemps est de faire découvrir à de jeunes chercheur.e.s en devenir le champ thématique « Histoire audiovisuelle au XXe siècle : Corps, pratiques et émotions » et de leur faire rencontrer des collègues dont l’expertise est reconnue dans ce domaine.

Les points d’entrée théoriques nécessaires seront présentés et un certain nombre de sources seront examinées en groupe :
- Quelles théories et quels procédés d’analyse des médias et de mise en contexte historique peut-on en déduire ?
- Quelles sont les sources primaires et secondaires pertinentes et comment y avoir accès ?
- Dans les médias historiques, comment peut-on identifier et analyser les émotions, les formes de subjectivation et les perceptions liées au corps ?
- Quels éléments peut-on en retirer concernant le public, son usage des différents médias et leur réception ?

L’école de printemps comprend des exposés et des ateliers animés par des expert.e.s, une visite de la collection technique du musée du film de Postdam, une table ronde ainsi que des projections. Elle bénéficiera d’une collaboration avec l’Institut National Audiovisuel Français (INA) et de la présence de la directrice de l’INAthèque, Claude Mussou. En outre, le professeur Frank Bösch (directeur du Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung de Postdam) présentera une keynote dont le sujet sera War, Films and Emotions, 1895-1960. Les participant.e.s sont également invité.e.s à présenter leurs propres projets de recherche.

Cette école de printemps aura lieu au Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung de Berlin ; tous les travaux se feront en anglais. Des bourses de voyage sont disponibles sur demande, et des suggestions de logement pourront être fournies si nécessaire.

The theme
In the early twenty-first century, organisms are understood as having life cycles, inherited sequences of stages through which they reproduce and adapt to environmental challenges. Strategies to disrupt pest and pathogen life cycles play key roles in agriculture, biomedicine and public health. Organisms are also connected to each other, as well as to the air, soil, rocks and water, by material fluxes forming ‘biogeochemical’ cycles. The continual recycling of such elements and compounds as carbon, nitrogen and water links the life and environmental sciences from biochemistry to geology and ecology. The effects of human activities on these nutrient cycles threaten us with climate change, resource depletion and pollution, some of the biggest challenges in global politics today. Yet if cycles are topical, they are neither all new, nor all the same. Cycles of various kinds are among the oldest ways of framing human existence on earth and in the cosmos, and of thinking about health and disease, animals and plants – and at least calendars and seasons remain fundamental. This summer school seeks to understand the history of ‘cycles of life’ from early times to the present day, to trace connections and to identify patterns of continuity and change.

Cycles of generation and corruption, and of the transformation of the elements, have long structured knowledge and everyday life. The revolutions of the celestial bodies were thought to shape repeated events in the sublunary sphere, from the succession of the seasons to women’s monthly bleeding. Linking microcosm and macrocosm, William Harvey likened the circulation of the blood to the weather cycle. Human beings, their bodily constitutions and fever cycles determined by natal astrology, proceeded through the seven ages of man (or woman) in the hope that individual death would be followed by not just a new generation, but also spiritual rebirth. Religious festivals, calendars and almanacs followed an annual cycle, although Judaeo-Christian theology was based on a finite, arrow-like chronology that would provide an important resource for a transformation in conceptions of time around 1800.

In the Age of Revolutions this world was reconceived as a historical phenomenon subject to natural law. Enlightenment savants, notably William Hutton and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, proposed that nature ran in perpetual cycles. Hutton’s earth was a machine like a steam-engine for producing worlds without beginning or end; in Lamarck’s transformism spontaneous generation initiated series upon series of ascending forms. By the nineteenth century theories of evolution were founded on the reality of irreversible change, not least through extinction. Individual organisms were understood to develop through life cycles that occasionally showed ‘alternation of generations’, the phenomenon of a species appearing in two different forms, such that an individual would resemble its grandmother and granddaughters, but not mother or daughters. Rich studies of life cycles led to new understanding of the reproduction of plants and animals, with perturbations providing variations from which nature would select.

The ground was laid for a more general view of cycles of life and nutrition during the debates that in the mid-1800s pitted Louis Pasteur against Justus Liebig and defined the roles of biology and chemistry in explaining the phenomena of generation, contagion and putrefaction. Biologically, life, even microscopic life, came to be understood as arising not spontaneously, but strictly from reproduction of the same species. Chemically, the cycles were more promiscuous: in accordance with the principle of the conservation of matter, microbes made new life possible by rotting dead bodies, returning their molecules to the earth and making them available for another organism. Pasteur taught that life stems from death and death from life in an eternal cycle. Chemical changes in individual bodies — Liebig’s ‘metamorphoses’, or ‘metabolism’ as it came to be known — were thus linked to life cycles and the larger circulation of elements. Fundamental cycles of photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation and carbon assimilation were identified in plants.

Biological cycles gained currency in the mid-twentieth century, from the citric acid (Krebs) to the menstrual cycle, from nutrient to cell cycles. On a larger scale, by deploying radioactive isotopes as tracers after World War II, ecologists such as Evelyn Hutchinson followed carbon and phosphorus through biogeochemical cycles that included living and non-living compartments of ‘ecosystems’. Cyberneticians touted ‘circular systems’ as a general key to ‘self-regulating processes, self-orientating systems and organisms, and self-directing personalities’; and feedback became a standard concept. Control techniques were invented to intervene in biological cycles and create artificial ones, from the oral contraceptive pill and IVF treatment to the thermal cycling that drives the polymerase chain reaction.

Historians have investigated only a few biological cycles and largely in isolation; this school aims to encourage synthesis. We shall explore shared properties of cycles, and the differences and relations between one discipline or research programme and another and over the centuries. Modern metabolic and diurnal cycles oscillate. Life cycles are directional and their individual spans finite. Heredity and evolution work through their succession and endless variation. Ecological cycles are open-ended – and yet the ideal of a return to an original state underpins all modern conservation and restoration work. Concepts of cyclicity in the life sciences thus operate on vastly different spatial and temporal scales, and at the same time constitute a productive point of intersection with physics, chemistry, geology and economics. How much the various modern and premodern cycles have in common, or what biological cycles share with those in other sciences, and other domains of knowledge and practice, are open questions. The theme ‘cycles of life’ invites fresh engagement with the history of the life sciences over the long term.

"In Tuscany", writes Leon Battista Alberti – evidently not without a touch of pride – in his treatise on architecture, "there are wonderful hospitals that were built for incredible sums." He is not alone in his opinion, for many other writers, thinkers and travellers likewise pay tribute to the activities, facilities and beauty of these charitable institutions, whose functions were so much more wide-ranging than those of the "hospital" as we understand it today. As hospices that cared for the sick and dying, as homes for foundlings, orphans and the poor, and at the same time in their role as administrators of land holdings and financial assets, hospitals were intimately bound up with social and religious life in towns and cities. These institutions shaped the urban structure and the cityscape of Italian municipalities to a degree that is difficult for us to imagine today, and therein reflect the permanent presence of poverty, disease and death in civic life in the Early Modern era.

This year's summer school at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz aims to approach these broader phenomena by studying the "hospital" as microcosm. It enquires in particular into the role played in these institutions by art as the mediator between poverty and wealth, the healthy and the sick, the soul and the body – in short, between life and death. It is interested firstly in examining in what way the endowment and patronage of hospitals is bound up with the need for spiritual salvation or personal prestige, in other words how it reflects social structures. The lavish architectural design and artistic decoration of many hospitals point, secondly, to fundamental notions and beliefs regarding the impact and (healing) effect of works of visual art. A third area of interest is the eminent socio-historical significance of the institutions for artists of the Early Modern era, who not only held meetings and deepened their knowledge of anatomy here, but also ran their workshops, lived and in some cases even built their burial chapels inside such hospitals.

The summer school is addressed to advanced undergraduates, PhD students and recent postdocs in the sphere of art history or related disciplines. Participants will be expected to deliver presentations. A good passive knowledge of German is required in order to be able to take active part in discussions. The Institute funds the costs of accommodation and reimburses half of actual travel costs. Participants also receive a daily allowance. 

Applications should be accompanied by a C.V., a letter of recommendation and if necessary copies of certificates. In the case of undergraduates, we also ask for copies of records of achievement in your main subject. In addition to Florence, excursions are planned to Altopascio, Pistoia, Prato, Rome and Siena, among others. With this schedule in mind, we welcome suggestions from applicants for one to three presentation topics and will endeavour to take wishes into account if possible.
