“Mothers of the Race”: Eugenics and Women in Early Twentieth Century Ontario

The eugenics movement – the set of ideas based on the notion that “mankind” could be improved by selective breeding – swept the world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In North America, over thirty American states and two Canadian provinces enacted laws requiring coerced sterilization of those deemed “unfit.” While we might expect that the targets of such legislation and other eugenic practices were so-called “feeble-minded” women, the significance of the role of women as leaders in the movement and in promoting eugenic ideas may come as a surprise. In fact, many leading first wave (or “maternal”) feminists found eugenic ideas coexisted easily with other goals. In Canada, for example, some of our erstwhile historical heroines were important eugenicists. These include prominent Ontario physician and beloved public health advocate, Dr. Helen MacMurchy (1862–1953) and Alberta magistrate Emily Murphy and writer Nellie McClung, two of the “Famous Five,” the group of women at the centre of the celebrated 1929 Privy Council decision which declared women to be “persons.” In the U.S., Harvard biologist Charles Davenport who created the Eugenics Record Office in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, drew year after year upon cohorts of university-educated women to undertake family studies which purported to show that various undesirable traits were inherited. In this talk, I will focus on the connections between women and eugenics in my own research on the history of eugenics and law in Ontario – highlighting the work of Dr. Helen MacMurchy and the role of women involved in multiple ways in a sensational criminal trial in 1936 in which a young woman who distributed birth control information was successfully defended against obscenity charges partly on the basis of eugenic principles.

Elizabeth Koester currently holds a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. After practising law for many years, she undertook graduate studies in the history of medicine at the Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Toronto and was awarded a PhD in 2018. A book based on her dissertation, In the Public Good: Eugenics and Law in Ontario, was released in September 2021 by McGill-Queen’s University Press.

Saints, Cure-Seekers and Miraculous Healing in Twelfth-Century England

Ruth J. Salter

Boydell & Brewer
262 Pages
2021

Traces the journey from ill health to miraculous cure through the lens of hagiographical texts from twelfth-century England.
The cults of the saints were central to the medieval Church. These holy men and women acted as patrons and protectors to the religious communities who housed their relics and to the devotees who requested their assistance in petitioning God for a miracle. Among the collections of posthumous miracle stories, miracula, accounts of holy healing feature prominently and depict cure-seekers successfully securing their desired remedy for a range of ailments and afflictions. What can these miracle accounts tell us of the cure-seekers' experiences of their journey from ill health to recovery, and how was healthcare presented in these sources?

This book aims to answer these questions via an in-depth study of the miraculous cure-seeking process, considering Latin miracle accounts produced in twelfth-century England, a time both when saints' cults flourished and there was an increasing transmission and dissemination of classical and Arabic medical works. Focused on seven shorter miracula (including Eadmer of Canterbury's Miracula S. Dunstani and Thomas of Monmouth's Vita et Passione S. Wilelmi Martyris Norwicensis) with a predominantly localised appeal, and thus on a select group of cure-seekers - including Abbot Osbert of Notley who suffered from an eye complaint, Leofmær the bedridden knight, and Gaufrid who experienced a bad tooth extraction - the volume brings together studies of healthcare and pilgrimage, looking at the alternative to secular medical intervention and the practicalities and processes of securing saintly assistance.

Ancientbiotics: Medieval Medicines for Modern Infections

Lecture

Wednesday, 1 December, 2021 - 18:00

The live link for this event will be added to this webpage 1 hour before the event begins

Speaker: Dr Erin Connelly, University of Warwick

Medieval manuscripts contain numerous remedies for the treatment of microbial infections, and these often involve complex preparations of medicinal plants and multiple ingredients. But how does the past inspire present research? This lecture will discuss the outputs and current research performed by the Ancientbiotics collaboration, a multi-institutional, international, and interdisciplinary project exploring questions of ethnopharmacology and the antimicrobial efficacy of ingredients from historical and traditional medical sources.

Une histoire culturelle et médicale du nouveau-né

Oxford Textbook of the Newborn: A Cultural and Medical History

Michael Obladen

  • Publisher ‏ : ‎ Oxford University Press (October 18, 2021)
  • Language ‏ : ‎ English
  • Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 464 pages
  • ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0198854807

Well into the 20th century, one in four newborns failed to survive their first year of life. It was after World War II that medicine "discovered" the newborn as a human being entitled to medical treatment and prioritised care. Since its definition by Alexander Schaffer in 1960, neonatology has
evolved into a mature, innovative, and ethical field. A large number of medical professionals' care for neonates, yet no definitive medical history of the newborn has been available until now.

The Oxford Textbook of the Newborn: A Cultural and Medical History offers readers a unique and authoritative resource on the 3000-year history of the newborn within Western societies. Written by Professor Michael Obladen, a leading voice in neonatology, this book reflects on our perception of
newborns, from the earliest days of human thought, through to the traces that remained in medieval life and persist today. It unearths ideas and evidence of societies' perceptions of newborns through a beautifully illustrated, impressive and often never-seen-before set of historical sources from
libraries, archives, churches, excavation fields, and hospital charts around the world.

Split into 8 sections which each cover aspects of the natural lifecycle of a neonate, this book demonstrates the impact of religion, law, ethics, philosophy and culture on newborns' quality of life, and covers fascinating topics such as the rites of passage for the newborn, infanticide, opium use,
breastfeeding, and artificial feeding. Each chapter is written in an accessible style and includes high-quality historical illustrations which really bring the subject to life.

L’expertise psychiatrique légale

L’expertise psychiatrique légale: passé, présent et défis futurs

Colloque interdisciplinaire
