Description
The Johns Hopkins Department of the History of Medicine of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine invites applications for tenure-track faculty at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The Department seeks a new colleague in the area of pre-modern medicine, health, and healing before 1800 whose research is innovative and agenda-setting and would extend the scope of the department’s research, teaching, and expertise. The successful candidate would also engage closely with our unique Historical Collections which contains more than 30,000 rare books with a substantial focus on printed works from Europe and North America. Our teaching remit stretches across several divisions of the University, including Ph.D. and online MA students within our department’s degree-granting programs, MD and MPH students within the broader schools of medicine and public health at Johns Hopkins, and undergraduates and graduate students at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences through the Program in the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology. The successful candidate would help to anchor our survey teaching in history of premodern medicine for undergraduate, MA (online), and PhD students.
Founded in 1929, the Institute of the History of Medicine is dedicated to promoting scholarship on the history of medicine, disease, and the health sciences, and their relation to society The Institute seeks to bring historical perspectives to bear on contemporary health issues as part of a lively and collegial intellectual community across the humanities and medical sciences.
Qualifications
A successful candidate will bring energy and enthusiasm to this broad array of learners and be successful at reaching a range of audiences. In addition to excellence in historical scholarship and teaching, they should also demonstrate the capacity to communicate the enduring relevance of historical analysis to potential audiences in clinical practice, health policy, and the general public. Applicants must have defended a Ph.D. by June 30, 2027.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, C.V., statement of research interests, a sample syllabus, a chapter-length writing sample, and contact information for three letters of reference. Applications and related materials are due by August 31, 2026, via Interfolio submission. Review of applications will begin shortly afterwards, and will continue until a suitable candidate is found.
