5th Annual Meeting of the Working Group

 Date: June 19–20, 2026

Venue: University Library Marburg Marburg

Deadline: February 1, 2026

Organizers: Tanja Pommerening, Nils P. Heeßel

Dear colleagues, friends of ancient medicine, after another successful meeting of the Working Group “Marburg Dialogues on Ancient Healing Arts” (MGAH, German abbreviation) last July, we would now like to cordially invite you to the 5th annual meeting.

We would like to invite you to take part in actively shaping the conference. There are two ways in which you can do this: present your current research or PhD project related to “Ancient Medicine” as a 20-minute presentation followed by 20 minutes for discussion. We would especially like to encourage early career researchers to apply with a presentation. Alternatively, you can open our 90-minute discussion session with a 10-to-15-minute input presentation on a current topic in the history of pharmacy or medicine. Last year’s discussion session, for example, focused on the topic ‘AI and Ancient Medicine: opportunities, considerations and risks for the use of AI and other digital methods’. After an introduction to the topic, we split up into smaller groups to discuss the topic with the help of a handout, before coming together for a final plenary discussion.

This year, we are also pleased to announce that the public keynote lecture will be delivered by Prof. em. Dr. Liba Taub (University of Cambridge), a renowned expert on the history of science.

As in previous years, we have decided against having a predefined overarching theme in order to give all interested participants the opportunity to present their own topic. You are therefore free to present whatever you wish to share and discuss with a group of experts and other interested persons.

If you would like to present a 20-minute contribution, please send us your proposed title by e-mail. Please add an abstract of about 300 words, outlining the research question and the expected results of your project.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal for a 10 to 15-minute input lecture, please also send us your proposal for a discussion topic by e-mail. Please attach to your proposal a description of your thesis or topic.

The languages of presentation are German and English.

Please send all proposals by February 1, 2026 to Marta Chervinka (ag-mgah@staff.uni-marburg.de <https://home.staff.uni-marburg.de/imp/dynamic.php?page=mailbox> ), who is also available to answer any questions you may have.

The final program will be announced in spring 2026.
