Learning Cycles: Medieval Knowledge-production on the Menstrual Cycle

Rosalie Gabay Bernheim (St Andrews) and Kerstin Mayerhofer (Vienna) invite abstracts on the medieval understandings of menstruation / menarche / menopause, and further topics connected to the menstrual cycle, for a proposed strand of sessions at Leeds International Medieval Congress (IMC) 2025. Submissions from all disciplinary backgrounds are welcome, and papers can pertain to any time period between 300 and 1500. Papers might explore topics such as:
- Learning about gender and sexuality through the menstrual cycle
- Understanding the menstrual cycle in medieval medical texts
- Understanding the menstrual cycle and (in-)fertility
- Understanding and treating menstrual irregularities
- Understanding the menstrual cycle in religious environments (textual, spatial, traditional, legal)
- Menstruation, identity, and othering
If you are interested in participating in our session(s) please submit the following: an abstract of up to 300 words, your name and institutional address, and your preference for presenting in-person or online. Send your proposal to mayerhk2@univie.ac.at by the 15th of September, 2024.
