Bourse de doctorat au CHSTM

PhD/RA opportunity at the CHSTM for a Wellcome Trust funded project

Call for applications

We have an opportunity for a research assistant to join the Division of Medical Education and the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine for a four-year period, during which the successful candidate will work on a project directed by Cinzia Greco and complete a PhD in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine.

The Division and the Centre will be the location of a research project in social sciences and humanities applied to medicine. The research project is funded by the Wellcome Trust, and will explore medical uncertainty and patients’ and medical professionals’ experiences of Long Covid, fibromyalgia, ME/CFS and chemobrain.

The successful candidate will participate in the research project, collecting data both autonomously and under the guidance of Cinzia Greco and Carsten Timmermann.

The methods used will include qualitative ethnographic methods (in particular qualitative interviews) and social media analysis/digital ethnography. Some experience in either ethnographic or social media analysis methods is a plus, but training and guidance will be available through the doctoral programme, University of Manchester training resources, and potentially external resources. The successful candidate will further contribute to the management of the overall research project (data analysis, interactions with stakeholders, administration) and contribute to publications and oral presentations based on the data collected. While the research assistant will contribute to the work on all four the conditions (Long Covid, fibromyalgia, ME/CFS and chemobrain), it is anticipated that they will have a focus on fibromyalgia and ME/CFS.

While working on the project, the successful candidate will be enrolled in the PhD programme in History of Science, Technology and Medicine, under the supervision of Carsten Timmermann and Cinzia Greco, and will complete an original doctoral project and dissertation using the data collected within the main research project and having autonomy in doing so.
