Reconsidérer la maladie et la guérison dans le monde moderne

Reconsidering Illness and Recovery in the Early Modern World

Online Conference

18th August 2020, 1-4pm
19th August 2020, 1-3pm

This conference will bring together an interdisciplinary community of researchers to reconsider the role of illness and recovery in the early modern world in light of the current crisis. The topics of health, illness and recovery sit at the intersection of some of the most significant themes in early modern history and are particularly relevant today. The ways in which contemporaries interpreted, represented, monitored, controlled and ultimately recovered from illness have broad implications for the study of science, medicine, religion, art, literature and so much more.
We are delighted to announce our keynote speakers:
• Professor John Henderson of Birkbeck, University of London, presenting his new research on the French Disease.
• Dr Hannah Newton of The University of Reading, presenting a paper entitled ‘Inside the Sickchamber: The Experience of Illness Through Six Objects’.

We particularly welcome proposals from postgraduate and early career researchers. We also extend our invitation of both attendance and participation to undergraduate and PGT students from all disciplines. A selection of books relevant to the topic will be given as a prize for the best PGR paper presented at the conference.

The conference will be comprised of three panels, each consisting of three 15-minute presentations and questions/discussion. We invite submissions for the following provisional panels:
Day One: Panel One Epidemic and Infectious Disease
Day One: Panel Two Death, Dying, and Mortality
Day Two: Panel Three Medicine and Recovery

Please submit abstracts of no more than 300 words for 15-minute presentations to illnessandrecovery@gmail.com
Deadline for submissions: 3 July
