American Institute of the History of Pharmacy Grants

Since its founding in 1941, the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy has encouraged research and writing about the history of pharmacy. AIHP currently sponsors two grant programs intended to promote academic scholarship about topics related to the history of pharmacy.

The AIHP Ph.D. Thesis Support Grant is intended to encourage academic research of pharmaco-historical topics by doctoral candidates and offers a grant-in-aid of up to $2,000 to a graduate student to assist in historical investigations of some aspect of pharmacy. Any dissertation or thesis project devoted to the history of pharmacy, history of drugs, or other humanistic study utilizing a pharmaco-historical approach, is eligible. Any graduate student in good standing at an institution of the United States may apply, regardless of the department through which the Doctor of Philosophy degree will be granted.

The Sonnedecker Grant for Visiting Research in the History of Pharmacy provides periodic short-term assistance for travel, maintaining temporary residence in Madison, and meeting research expenses associated with utilizing the pharmaco-historical collections, which have been developed in Madison during more than a century by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, and the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy. Historians, pharmacists, and other scholars working on historical research related to the history of pharmacy, including the history of drugs, may apply for the next available Sonnedecker Grant for Visiting Research in the History of Pharmacy.
