Prison Medicine: Health and Incarceration in History

Call for papers

We are pleased to announce the Call for Papers for our 2 day multi--‐disciplinary conference ‘Prison Medicine: Health and Incarceration in History’ covering the broad areas of museums, nursing, medical services, health, allied and mental health. Researchers, scholars, historians, policy makers, doctors, nurses and other stakeholders are welcome to submit an original research paper or presentation on the theme of the history of health and health services in prisons.

We invite responses to this theme in a variety of formats: formal papers (20 minutes long), panels (75 minutes long including 15 minutes for Q and A), posters, and flash presentations (5 minute presentations in which a speaker describes an area of research). We recognise that diverse issues have been involved in the provision of health and health services to prisoners over time, and we welcome conference participants to contribute to mapping the history of medical service provision to this vulnerable community.

Duration: Two days with an evening ‘Ghost Tour’ of Old Parramatta Gaol

Location: Old Parramatta Gaol cnr New & Dunlop Streets Nth Parramatta, NSW.

Directions: Beside the historic Lennox Bridge, a 10 minute walk from Parramatta Station and River Cat ferry wharf.

The ‘Caring for the Incarcerated: Lessons from the past, policy for the future’ research project is a collaboration between the School of Medicine at the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network NSW, and receives financial support from UOW through the Global Challenges program and the Faculty of Science Medicine & Health. We also gratefully acknowledge support from the Justice Museums Group, Old Parramatta Gaol management and the Deerubbin Land Council.
