Wellcome Trust History of Medicine PhD Studentship
Call for applications
Background
The Centre for History in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine invites applications for a doctoral studentship. The studentship is funded by the Wellcome Trust, as part of Dr Alex Mold’s Medical Humanities New Investigator Award on the place of the public in post-war British public health. Funding is available for a three year studentship, starting in September 2015. Supervision will be provided by Dr Alex Mold. The project will explore the place of the public in public health through an analysis of the recent history of heart disease.
Project Details: Heart Disease, Public Health and the Public, 1948-2010
This PhD studentship will examine the ways in which the public were constructed in the response to a major chronic illness and cause of morbidity and mortality in post-war Britain: coronary heart disease. Heart disease will act as a ‘tracer condition’ with which to explore the place of the public within the changing nature of public health, as attention shifted from infectious to chronic disease as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Through an examination of archival sources, published work and public health campaign material, this project will develop a deeper analysis of the impact of epidemiological research on public health, and particularly what this did to the conception of the public in relation to chronic illnesses like heart disease.
Research Environment
LSHTM is an international centre of excellence in global public health, one of Europe’s leading postgraduate medical institutions and Britain’s nation school of public health. The Centre promotes research and teaching in the history of public health in the twentieth and twenty first centuries.
