Job Opportunity


The Health Sciences Library at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY is seeking a Curator to develop and implement restoration and preservation procedures and to maximize the visibility of the History of Medicine collections through programming, exhibits, and the development of web content. This position reports to the Health Sciences Library Director. Responsibilities include enhancing access to collections through the innovative application of technologies; cataloging items; digitizing photographs; preservation of paper and objects; developing a plan to organize the collections; responding to History of Medicine requests from scholars and the SUNY Upstate community; conducting tours of the collections; supervising scholars’ use of the collections; assisting with primary research; preparation of reports, surveys, budget requests and justifications; and identification of external funding in support of exhibits, programming and digitization projects..

Required: Masters degree in History (Archives emphasis), Library Sciences, or other closely related field; professional archival experience, preferably in an academic archives; demonstrated knowledge of and experience with program planning, web based content development, digital imaging and archives related information technologies, and the preservation process; demonstrated familiarity with primary research methods and materials; a strong customer service orientation; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex, fast-paced environment; and proficiency with MS Office products.

Preferred: knowledge of history of medicine and experience in an academic library.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Initial appointment will be at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian. Excellent benefits package including TIAA-CREF and other retirement options. One year term appointment with the potential to be extended. Position is open until filled.
