BSSH South of England Sport and Leisure History Network - Autumn 2013 workshop

Call for Papers

University of Sussex, Saturday 26th October 2013

The British Society of Sports History's South of England Sport and Leisure History Network (BSSH South) aims to bring together individuals in Greater London, the South East and the East of England who share an interest in the history of leisure in all of its forms (including sport, cinema-going, popular music, reading, tourism, shopping for pleasure, etc.). BSSH South will be holding a one-day workshop on Saturday, 26th October at the University of Sussex's campus in Brighton, in what is the inaugural event for the network's South East Branch (comprising the counties of Surrey, Kent, and East and West Sussex).

The conference organisers are seeking papers for the following three panels:

• Leisure and Tourism
• Leisure and Gender
• Crowds, Audiences and Spectacles

If you would be interested in giving a paper under one of these themes, please send an abstract (c. 200-300 words; please also identify which panel you would like to speak on) and a brief biography to organisers Dion Georgiou and Ben Litherland at bsshsoutheast@gmail.com by Saturday, 31st August. Papers focusing on the South of England are particularly welcome, but we will consider all proposals, providing they meet one of the stated panel themes.

The conference will also feature a keynote lecture by Professor David Hendy (University of Sussex), who was responsible for the recent BBC Radio 4 series Noise: A Human History and the accompanying publication, Noise: A Human History of Sound and Listening (2013).
