Call for Papers Workshop, University of Bristol, 13 June 2013
The Department of Historical Studies at the University of Bristol is holding a one day workshop relating to the theme of Animals and Empire.
Animal studies is an emerging field within the arts and humanities, transcending disciplinary boundaries in its investigation of the relationships between humans and other animals in subjects such as history, philosophy and literature.
This workshop centres on the role of animals and the place of human-animal relationships in the history of the British Empire. We invite proposals for twenty minute papers relating to this theme. Proposals that address the following topics, or to any related topics, are welcome:
- Animals, Science, Technology and Medicine
- Animal landscapes
- Hunting
- Animality and race
- Animal exhibition
- Conservation in the post-colonial world
- Animals in empire fiction
- Wild animal trade
Participants may also wish to attend a public lecture which will be given by Professor William Beinart at the Bristol Zoo Gardens on the evening of 12 June 2013. The lecture will be preceded by an historical tour of the Zoo Gardens.
Please send proposals to the lead organiser, Andy Flack (Andrew.Flack@bristol.ac.uk) by 14 March 2013.
The organising committee will review proposals and provide notification of the outcome by 28 March 2013.
Modest financial assistance is available to facilitate the attendance of postgraduate researchers who are presenting papers.
