This conference is organised by Erasmus University of Rotterdam and the Arnold Leuftink Foundation, the Netherlands, and by the Scientific Committee on History of Prevention of Occupational and Environmental Diseases of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH). It will follow successful meetings in Rome (1998), Norrköping (2001), Birmingham (2007), and San Francisco (2010).
The central theme is:
The struggle about ‘evidence’ in occupational and environmental health
The conference will span three days (29 – 31 October 2013) and includes keynote addresses by international leaders in the field, multiple panel discussions, and original abstract presentations. There will also be a pre-conference workshop (28 October 2013) on methods in historical research.
At this conference, various speakers will demonstrate how current concepts of risk and risk assessment have been shaped in the past centuries through health professionals, employers, employees, and governments. Specific topics that will be addressed:
- societal responses to evidence and the struggle between stakeholders
- the role of risk perception in shaping evidence
- the emergence of professional knowledge and practice
- formation of a professional body of knowledge and its influence on the development of professions
- coping with risk through businesses approaches such as insurance companies
- the process of legislation and risk management.
The conference attracts between 150-200 health professionals and scientists who will actively share their passion and knowledge on history in occupational and environmental health. This conference is the meeting place for all those who are interested in history research and in understanding how history is continuously shaping our current discipline. Due to its informal nature, contacts are easily established and network opportunities are plentiful. Come and get to know your colleagues and peers!
