La science des maladies au Moyen-Âge

Call for Papers for a Session on

The Scientific Understanding of Disability in the Middle Ages

at the 48th International Congress on Medieval Studies

May 9-12, 2013 Kalamazoo, Michigan

On behalf of Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Purdue University, Shaun Hughes and Yonsoo Kim invite abstract proposals for the following session:

The Scientific Understanding of Disability in the Middle Ages

This session invites proposals to consider how disability is described in medieval medical and technical works (Fachprosa). Do the scholars of the period have anything to add to what they may have gleaned from their Classical and Arabic sources? Is it even possible to talk about a "discussion of disability" in the Middle ages?

Please send abstracts for this session to Shaun Hughes sfdh@purdue.edu.
Abstracts should be submitted by 15 September 2012 and should be approximately 250 words in length. Please also include with your submission a completed Participant Information Form.
