The Research Assistant will actively contribute to the ‘Makers of Modern Biomedicine: testimony and legacy’ project of the History of Modern Biomedicine Research Group, funded until December 2016 by a Strategic Award from the Wellcome Trust to Professor Tilli Tansey. The Group exists to promote the study of recent medicine and medical science; to create and strengthen synergistic links between professional medical historians and members of the biomedical research community; and to encourage the creation of archival deposits for future research.
The post-holder will contribute to the efficient organisation and running of Witness Seminars and have responsibility for editing and publishing transcripts of these in the series Wellcome Witnesses to Twentieth Century Medicine, normally as co-editor. They will ensure the effective dissemination of information/research findings about and from the research group within the UK and abroad, and will be actively involved in undertaking research investigations in collaboration with and under the supervision of  Professor Tansey, as required.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD and at least five years’ experience of professional editing and publishing, as well as experience in historic and archive research methods and processes.  Knowledge of recent medical history and medical sciences would be desirable. The successful candidate will work effectively as part of a team, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an ability to organise and prioritise work and research within the project timetable.
The post is full time and fixed term for 51 months (starting from 1st October 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter). Starting salary will be in the range of £33,944–£43,353 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme, and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
