The Collaborative Research Center “Cultures of Vigilance: Transformations – Spaces – Techniques” at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München invites applications for the position of

a research associate (65% - E 13 TV-L, Doc)


in the project “The hidden, suspicious, mutable sex. Shame and Vigilance in the Early Modern Period" starting from 1 August 2023 (the starting date is negotiable). The position is part time (65 % TV-L) and limited until 30 June 2027.

The project explores the early modern tension between shame and vigilance with regard to theories and practices of gender normalization. It aims to reconstruct the inspection and recording of genitalia and examines how these practices were linked to the goals maintaining gender order. The successful applicant will mainly work with sources from medical and legal practice. The project is led by Prof. Dr. Dr. Mariacarla Gadebusch Bondio and Dr. Brendan Röder and is part of the Collaborative Research Centre “Cultures of Vigilance: Transformations – Spaces – Techniques”. The interdisciplinary Center investigates the historical and cultural foundations of vigilance, which refers to a linking of individual attentiveness to goals set by others.

Your responsibilities conduct research in the context of this project (with the aim of a doctoral degree in early modern history)
prepare and participate in publications
support and organize academic events and activities
participate in and help organize the events of the integrated doctoral research training group of the Collaborative Research Centre 

Your profile candidates should have completed their MA in the field of history, medical history or related fields with a focus on early modern history and/or gender history by the time their contract starts
experience with early modern archival documents (preferably German or Italian but applicants wishing to work on relevant material in other languages will also be considered)
the working languages within the project are English or German; German communication skills are an advantage but not a requirement
candidates should demonstrate their openness towards working in an interdisciplinary context
