Légitimité et autorité dans la médecine britannique

Spaces of Legitimacy and Voices of Authority in British Medicine

Call for Papers

Date: February 16, 2018

Location: California, United States

I recently had a participant drop out of a panel for the Pacific Coast Conference on British Studies (PCCBS) annual meeting, and am looking for a replacement. The conference is approaching quickly, and will be in Santa Barbara, CA from March 23rd to 25th, 2018. Here is the description for the original panel:

“This proposed panel includes three different papers that consider medicine in Great Britain over a broad chronological range. Specifically, this panel will consider the spaces and places where medicine was practiced, analyzing the ways in which different kinds of spaces and various voices claimed authority within their respective disciplines. Physical spaces, such as madhouses, private homes, and clinics, are considered here, as well as the ways in which voices of authority were often gendered at various points in British history.”

Currently, the two papers left on the panel consider the gendered side of medicine, and gendered authority. I am looking for a third paper that covers anything about physical spaces of medicine in Britain, in any century, to fit in with the above description.

The conference organizeers encourage interdisciplinary panels, so all relevant disciplines are welcome! For more information on the conference in general, please see: http://www.pccbs.org/. FYI, there is a possibility of financial help for graduate students through the Stern Trust. More information about this can be found on the PCCBS website.

The first registration deadline is February 16th, so if you are interested in participating, please send me an abstract and a CV by February 12th.
