The starting salary will be from £28,452 per annum within the Grade E band (£26,052 - £30,175).

The College wishes to recruit a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Professor Jonathan Barry and Dr Peter Elmer on the project "The Medical World of Early Modern England, Wales and Ireland c.1500-1715". This full-time Wellcome Trust funded post is available for twelve months from 1st September 2017 to 31st August 2018. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing the Microsoft Access database associated with the project (containing information on over 30,000 medical practitioners), to enable it to answer the project’s research questions and to provide a publicly accessible resource at the end of the project, as well as conducting some archival research and historical analysis associated with the database.

The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes; communicate complex information orally, in writing, and electronically; and help to prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD obtained or submitted by the date of commencing the post, or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study, and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be able to work with early modern archival and published sources; prepare, enter, and analyse data in a complex database; and offer support to the project investigators in developing quantitative measures to answer complex research questions using the database material; as well as developing the database for public access. A familiarity with early modern medical and social history would be highly desirable. There will be an opportunity to conduct and publish your own research on the database materials and related subjects. There is no expectation of teaching during this post. Applicants will be expected to be based largely in Exeter, although some time may be spent at the IHR in London, where technical support for the database is available.
