Fixed term for 36 months from 1/9/2017

Main purpose of the job:
The Senior Research Fellow will form part of a team working on a major Wellcome Trust Investigator Award entitled ‘A Theatre of Emotions: The Affective Landscape of Nineteenth-Century British Surgery’. They will work collaboratively with the other members of the team but will have particular responsibility for the strand of the project exploring the place of emotion in military surgery from the Napoleonic era to the First World War.
They are expected to have research expertise in the fields of the history of medicine/surgery and/or the history of war. At the end of the project they will have produced, or be at an advanced stage of producing, a scholarly monograph, a peer-reviewed journal article and another peer-reviewed journal article written in collaboration with the Principal Investigator. They will also involve themselves
in the Award’s associated engagement and outreach activities.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Developing and realizing autonomous and collaborative high-quality research in theory and/or practice
  • Representing the research in the Department, University and in public
  • Responsible for the quality assurance and enhancement of the project

  • Organising and/or presenting at exhibitions, symposia, creative processes and events related to the project
  • Working collegiately with other departmental colleagues to share ideas and contribute to the
  • academic aims and objectives of the department and University as a whole

  • experience of research leadership
  • the experience to deliver or contribute to impact of their research outside academia
  • experience of research-related or other enterprise activity
  • experience of external professional research engagement and networking
  • professional experience in areas relevant to the work of the department

Additional Information

Salary range: £38,428 to £41,655 p.a.
An appointment is usually made at the bottom of the relevant scale. Where a candidate’s current salary already exceeds the bottom point, consideration will be given to the level of skills, experience and profile that the candidate is bringing to the role.
The salaries of other staff doing the same or similar work within the department who have similar skills, experience and profile should also be taken into account.
The appointment is offered on a three year fixed term basis, starting on or around 1st September 2017, subject to satisfactory references.
The annual leave entitlement is 35 days p.a., additionally there are 3–4 days when the university closes for Christmas
There are no fixed hours of work and you are expected to give a full professional commitment and work for such reasonable hours as are necessary for you to fulfil your duties and responsibilities. You are expected to work flexibly to meet the needs of the University and Department, including evenings and weekends as required, within the context of the maximum working week as defined by the UK Working Time Regulations.
